CRYONIC

Michael Don
Timothy Sherman
WHAT IS CRYONIC?
● Cryonics → (from Greek 'kryos-'
meaning 'cold') is the low-temperature
preservation (usually at −196°C)
● Purpose : to hopefully save lives and
greatly extend lifespan.
● HALF-WAY for now : that future scientific
procedures will someday revive them
and restore them to youth and good
health
● "cryopreserved patient"
SCIENCE JUSTIFICATION
Cryonics is justified by three facts that
are not well known:

1) Life can be stopped and restarted if

its basic structure is preserved.

2) Vitrification (not freezing) can

preserve biological structure very
well.

3) Methods for repairing structure at

the molecular level can now be
foreseen.
HOW TO DO IT?

Cryonics Patients Pre-Treatment

1) Initial Cooldown and Transport

2) Washout and Perfusion

3) Further Cooldown and Storage

HISTORY TIMELINE OF CRYONIC
1. 1946 → Robert Ettinger discover cryogenic research by French biologist Jean Rostand (post WW-II)

2. 1962 → Robert Ettinger published “The Prospect of Immortality”

3. 1964 → TPOI widely published and translated into 9 languanges

4. 1966 → Cryonics society of California and Michigan are formed. “RE” become the president of it.
5. 1967 → Dr. James Bedford become the first man to be cryopreserved.

6. 1972 → Alcor was formed by Fred and Linda Chamberlain

7. 1976 → CI (Cryonic Institute) was formed by RE

8. 1986 → Eric Drexler = Concept of nanotechnology

9. 2003 → KrioRus (RUSSIA)

10. 2011→ RE died , cryopreserved as well as all of his family that had died

11. 2012→ Stasis System (Australia)

12. 2016 → Total Worldwide : 328 patient (cryopreserved) , > 2500 signing up.

PROS

● Survival of human race

● Potential to keep people with illnesses from getting worse and dying
● Organs could be preserved and banked for people who need them
● Human survival during extended space travel with minimal bodily atrophy
and aging
CONS

● Some scientist say it is possible, some isn’t : Human cells may continue to
age while cryonically preserved.
● Violates sense of what is particular and precious in life
● false expectation
● Promotes unawareness of mortality and connected values
● Degradation of human nature and destiny : change the ethics ( interrupts
the natural cycle of life)
GROUP’s SIDE

IF the purpose of Cryonics is to invent a new way of life

support, not resurrection →

IF the purpose is to IMMORTALITY → X
