English Expressions – Part 1

1. about to (do something)


- to be on the verge of doing something.

Examples:
- I was about to leave when the phone rang.
- I was about to tell her to shut up.

2. about time
- The proper time to do something.

Examples:
- Isn’t it about time that you move out of your parents’ house and get your own place?
- It’s about time we buy a new car and get rid of our old truck.

3. according to (someone or something)


- as said or told by someone, in agreement with something.

Examples:
- According to our teacher, there will be no classes next week.
- We did everything according to the terms of our agreement.

4. account for (something)


- to provide an explanation or answer for something.

Examples:
- The bad weather accounts for the fact that few people came to the meeting.
- So much corruption in this country accounts for the fact that people don’t
believe a word that our politicians say.

5. after all
- considering

Examples:
- You don't need to call him. After all , he never calls you.
- We don’t have to work that hard. After all , we are not getting paid.

6. all of a sudden
- suddenly, without advance warning

Examples:
- All of a sudden it became cloudy and began to rain.
- We were driving to the beach when all of a sudden we ran out of gas.

7. as a matter of fact
- actually

Examples:
- As a matter of fact , we have been to the History Museum many times.
- I called him last night, as a matter of fact.

8. as far as
- to the extent or degree of something

Examples:
- As far as I know the movie will start in 15 minutes.
- He seems to be very happy as far as I can tell.

9. as for
- with regard to, concerning

Examples:
- As for me, I think that I will return home tomorrow.
- As for you, I think you should stay out of this.

10. as if
- as though, like

Examples:
- He acts as if he was the owner.
- They play as if they were playing a championship.
