THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT OF SMAW

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

One does not simply weld and not have burn marks all over themselves.

All welders are constantly at risk on the job. Daily use welding equipment puts out heat
sparks metal and funny that are dangerous. Welders are exposed to these threats for several
hours or everyday. Finding the best safety equipment’s as key, these means identifying the
right types of protection for each job. Protective equipment should be isable and comfortable
and the highest quality available.

Its important that proper safety procedures be observed on any worksite. Obviously its a
responsibility that starts with the individual worker but constructors as well as their clients need
to be aware and assure that all necessary precautions are taken to be provide for the protection
of all workers as both an ethical and legal obligation. To make understanding welding safety
easier for everyone. This article will advantage of the various types of Personal Protective
Equipment (P.P.E).

Hopefully this information clarifies the wide world of Personal Protective Equipment. The
most important thing is to stay protected from head to toe, look for P.P.E that keeps the fine
balance of comfort without sacrificing safety. Without comfort and security welders can make
the most of their work without concern.

This article will break equipment by head, body and legs/feet. In some cases, not every
piece of equipment listed is necessary for example, a welding jacket will cover your arms and
body completely. It would be recommended to wear a welding jacket and welding apron.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using PPE among SMAW
student of Pudtol Vocational High School. This study also hopes to give sample information on
how the SMAW students of Pistol Vocational High School help themselves to improve using of
Personal Protective Equipment.

Statement of The Problem

Generally, this study aims to determine the Effectiveness of using PPE of SMAW Majors. This
study sought answer of the following questions. Specifically, this study aims to provide answer
to the following questions:

1.What is the profile of the respondent in the terms of?

1.1Age; and

1.2Sex

2.What is the extent of the use of PPE among SMAW students of PVHS?

3.What is the effectiveness of using PPE of SMAW students of PVHS

Significance of the study

This study will be highly beneficial to the ff:

School Administration-for the school principal to be aware of the insufficiency of Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE) for the student use. In addition to this will serve as a basis for the
principal to purchase additional PPE.

Teacher-For the teacher, don’t allow the students to work without using their Personal
Protective Equipment, to reduce the exposure to hazard when doing their activities.

-when the student uses a Proper Protective Equipment it will reduce the exposure to hazard
when doing their activities.

Future Research-this will serve as their guide to reduce more the exposure to hazard

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the effectiveness of using Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E)
among Grade 12 Students, for the School Year:2019-2020 at Pudtol Vocational High School,
Pudtol San Luis, Apayao.

This research also focuses only in the effectiveness of using Personal Protective Equipment
of Grade 12 SMAW Students, this research will have conducted through Interview methods.

Definition of Terms

Welding – joining of two or more pieces of metal together by the fusion process.

SMAW – Shielded Metal Arc Welding class/subject

Electrode – metal rod which conducts a current from the electrode holder to the base metal.

Base Metal – metal to be welded.

Effectiveness – the degree to which objectives are achieve and the extent to which targeted
problem are solved.

PPE or Personal Protective Equipment – specialized clothing worn by an student or

employee or for protection against Hazardous materials.
Safety is a major issue for day laborers and skilled laborers. Each year accidents frequently in SMAW
Students and often times it is due to the absence of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or failure to
wear the provided PPE. PPE is equipment that will protect workers against healthy or safety risk on their
major subject. The purpose is to reduce students exposure to hazards when engineering and
administration controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risk to acceptable levels. These hazard
risks can be anything from wet floors to falling debris and everything in between. PPE includes items such
as protective helmet ,eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, safety harnesses and
sometimes , respiratory protective equipment.

The purpose of Personal Protective Equipment is to reduce students exposure to hazard when engineering
controls and administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risk to acceptable levels.
PPE is needed when there are hazards present. PPE has the serious limitation that it does not eliminate
the hazard at the source and may result in students being exposed to the hazard if the equipment fails.

Any item of PPE imposes a barrier between the wearer/user and the working environment. This can
create additional strains on the wearer; impair their ability to carry out their work and create significant
levels of discomfort. Any of these can discourage wearers from using PPE correctly ,therefore placing
them at risk of injury, ill-health or under extreme circumstances, death. Good ergonomic design can help
minimize these barriers and can therefore help to ensure safe and healthy working conditions through the
correct use of PPE.

Practices of occupational safety and health can use hazard controls and intervention to mitigate work
place hazards , which pose a threat to the safety and quality of life of workers . the hierarchy of hazard
controls provides a policy framework which ranks the types of hazard controls in terms of absolute risk
reduction. At the top of the hierarchy are illimitation and substitution, which remove the hazard entirely
or replace the hazard with a safer alternative. If elimination or substitution measures cannot apply,
engineering controls and administrative controls, which seek to design safer mechanisms and coach safer
human behavior, are implemented. Personal protective equipment ranks last on the hierarchy of
controls, as workers are regularly expose to the hazard, with a barrier of protection. The hierarchy of
controls is important in acknowledging that, while personal protective equipment has tremendous utility,
it is not desired mechanism of control in terms of worker safety.
