Physics Problems:

1. A particle, initially resting at the origin, travels due west for 8 m and then turns
due north for 6 m. The time elapsed for the whole trip is 10 seconds.
a. What is the total distance travelled by the particle?
b. What is the total displacement travelled?
c. Find the average speed and velocity of the particle for the whole trip?
2. Find the x and y-components of a 25 m displacement at an angle of 210 degrees.
3. A force of 100 N makes an angle of theta with the x-axis and has a scalar y-component
of 30 N. Find both the scalar x-component of the force and the angle theta.
4. Using the three methods, find the resultant of the forces F1 = 10 N, 20 degrees and
F2 = 20 N, 150 degrees. (If not mentioned in the problem, the given angles are always
with respect to the positive x-axis).
5. Two forces, 80 N and 100 N acting at an angle of 60 degrees with each other, pull on
an object. What single force would replace the two forces?
6. A bug starts at point A, crawls 8 cm east, then 5 cm south, 3 cm west, and 4 cm north
to point B.
a. What is the total distance travelled by the bug?
b. How far from is the bug from its starting position A?
7. The resultant of the forces F1 = 50 lbs at 30 degrees and an unknown force F2 is 80
lbs at 80 lbs at 120 degrees. Determine the force F2, including its angle.
8. Two forces act on a point object as follows: 100 N at 170 degrees and 100 N at 50
degrees. Find their resultant using the three methods.
9. A student walks to school which is situated 1 km from his home. While walking halfway
through the journey, he forgot something and need to go back home. Then, from his
home he walks again to school.
a. What is the total distance and displacement of the journey?
b. If the total time elapsed is 1 hr, what was the student’s rate of walking?

10. Let F1 and F2 be vectors: F1 = 3i+2j-k N and F2 = i-3j. Determine:

a. F1 + F2

b. F1 .F2
c. F1 x F2
d. The angle between them
