Dear Ma’am

In my opinion, basically there are two differences about analytical exposition and hortatory
exposition.

First, the social function. The social function of analytical exposition is to persuade the readers or
listeners of there’s something need that surely need to get attention. It can be said this social
function is to analyze a topic and to persuade the reader that this opinion is correct and supported
by arguments. How about hortatory exposition? The social function of hortatory exposition is to
persuade the readers or listeners that something should or should not be the case or be done.

Secondly, the generic structure. Actually, it is the last part after argument and thesis. The last
part of analytical exposition is reiteration (restatement), restate speaker or writer’s position. For
example “So I agree with this proposition”. Then, the last part of hortatory exposition is
recommendation / statement what should or should not happen or be done based on the given
arguments. For example “Therefore, organic farming should replace conventional one to reduce
the using of pesticides…”.
