CAS Planning Form

Student Name: Gabriella Melhem

Activity Name: Volunteering at a child care centre

CAS element(s) involved:

C A S --------- Group

Description of Proposed Activity:

Working at a day care centre/pre-school, I would be expected to assist staff members by

interacting and caring efficiently for the needs of the children, including health, hygiene
and safety. This could include, preparing food, helping children during lunchtime, assist
in classroom clean up to ensure it is up to safety standards, reading books, supervising
outdoor activities such as sport, assisting and guiding the children in craft sessions and
other activities that generally take place on a daily basis. I may also have to assist the
teachers with naptime routines. I will also have the opportunity to foster relations with the
children and parents from diverse cultural backgrounds. This service will give me the
opportunity to be encouraged to be attentive to any parent concerns and develop further,
my leadership skills. I could also assist in any emergencies as I have completed my First
aid and CPR certificate.

Proposed Activity Supervisor:

Owner of Preschool

What challenges and/or new skills will this activity provide?

This activity could provide me with many skills, such as conveying information and
following specific instructions and procedures, multi tasking, time management, problem
solving, ability to work under pressure, meeting deadlines, all of which will assist with
character development, human endeavour and overall develop a good work ethic. I will
build on my leadership, communication skills and the ability to work with other
individuals, who could assist in benefitting my teamwork proficiencies, a necessary and
essential aspect in the IB. I will also have the opportunity to work with staff members that
are older than me which will be very benefitting when I apply for jobs, providing me with
prior understanding on how to work efficiently with adults. These skills could also
potentially assist one day by contributing to a future employers company growth and
success. This service activity could also have long-term advantages, stipulating me with
knowledge on how to take care of children or a child, which could also prove valuable for
when I have settled down later in life and make the choice to have kids. This activity may
also arise a new interest and spark satisfaction that could potentially provide me with
part time work or perhaps encourage me to instigate a small baby-sitting business. A
challenge I anticipate could be one of testing my patience in looking after young
dependant children for many hours and perhaps get a better understanding of just how
much work it takes in looking after such young kids. It will be an opportunity to apply a
sensitive and patient approach when dealing with kids. It will undoubtedly give me a
sense of empathy, appreciation and respect for my own mother.
