Summery Animal Farm

The character’s:
- Mrs and Mr Jones are the owners of the farm.
- A pig named Old Major: He’s highly regarded on the farm. (Karl
Marx, starter of the communism).
- Three dogs named Bluebell, Jessie and Pincher.
- Cart-horse Boxer: a gigantic horse, a white stripe down his nose
gave him a somewhat stupid appearance. He’s not very smart, but
still very respected for his tremendous powers of work.
- Cart-horse (paard gebruiken om te trekken) Clover: a mama horse
who is a little too heavy.
- A white goat named Muriel
- A donkey named Benjamin: he’s the oldest animal on the farm. He
rarely spoke and laughed he was devoted to Boxer. The two of
them usually spent their Sundays together.
- A white mare named Mollie: a foolish and flirty mare.
- A cat: nameless.
- A tame raven named Moses: he was Mr Jones pet. He was a spy
and a tale-bearer, but he was also a clever talker. Moses was not
beloved by the animals, because he told tales and didn’t work.
- A young boar (male pig) named Napoleon: a fierce-looking
Berkshire boar. He was the only Berkshire on the farm, not much of
a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way.
- A young boar named Snowball: he was a more vivacious than
Napoleon, quicker in speech and more inventive. They had a
different character.
- All the other male pigs on the farm were porkers. The best known
among them was a small fat pig named Squealer. He had round
cheeks, twinkling eyes and a shrill voice. He was a brilliant talker.
Chapter One

The animals feel like their lives don’t matter. They feel like they are
slaves to the owners of the farm. The animals see humans as their
enemies. All animals are allies.

The deeper side of the story is about the Russian Revolution.

The tsar wanted all the power in Russia, like Mr Jones wants the power
over the animals.
The citizens wanted freedom for everyone, the goal of communism was
equality. The animals are the citizens in Animal Farm. The want equality
and freedom.
The communism was all about reaching equality, but in reality things
went different. The citizens didn’t get any freedom, there was one
man with all the power the tsar (Mr Jones). Nobody was able to go
against him.

Chapter Two

Three nights later, Old Major died peacefully. This was at the beginning
of march. During the next three months the rebellion ideas of him started
to rise. The animals had secret meetings when Mr Jones was asleep.
Now, as it turned out, the Rebellion started way earlier. In past years Mr
Jones was a capable farmer, but of late he had become much more
disheartened after losing money in a lawsuit (rechtzaak) and he drank
more than ever. He did not do much beside drinking and laying down,
reading the newspaper. June came and nothing has changed. Some
days Mr Jones forgets to feed the animals. They are very underfed. At
last the animals couldn’t stand it no longer. One of the cows broke in the
door of the store-shed to get themselves some food. Mr Jones woke up.
The next moment he and his four men were in the store-shed trying to
punish the animals. The animals couldn’t bear it no longer and kicked
and butted Mr Jones and his men to the ground. Mr Jones and his men
fled to their cars and drove of the land, the animals followed them. The
rebellion started successfully. The Manor Farm was from the animals
now. The animals destroyed everything that reminded them of Mr Jones.
The animals changed the name of the farm from Manor Farm to Animal
Farm. The put a few commandants together. These commandants will
be the rules on the farm:
THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS
1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
3. No animals shall wear clothes.
4. No animals shall sleep in a bed.
5. No animals shall drink alcohol.
6. No animals shall kill any other animal.
7. All animals are equal.

The cows needed to be milked. The pigs milked them. There were a few
buckets of milk. The animals went to the hayfields. When they got back,
the milk buckets had disappeared.

Chapter Three

The animals start the great task of running the farm. The pigs supervise.
Things seem to be going well.
Boxer turns out, is a huge asset. He’s big and not so smart, yet he works
harder than anyone on the farm. Mollie the mare, however, is very lazy.
Benjamin, the donkey, is very cryptic and apathetic. For example, when
the animals ask about his opinion on the rebellion, Benjamin says
‘’Donkeys live a long time. None of you have seen a dead donkey.’’
The pigs try to educate the farm animals, only to find that their pupils
aren’t so good in education. They educate them in reading, but not all
animals succeed it. A few of them just can’t. To make things easier for
them, the Seven Commandants get condensed to a single maximum:
‘’Four legs good, two legs bad.’’
Meanwhile, Napoleon things education of the young was more important
than anything that could be done for those who were already grown up.
As soon as Jessie and Bluebell had both whelped, Napoleon took them
away from their mother, to give them good education.
Remember the milk went missing at the end of the second chapter..well,
the pigs are taking the milk and apples every day. But everyone is cool
with it, because they are the leaders. They have to maintain their health.
