About
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is an Indian entrepreneur and founder of
Biocon. She hails from Gujarat but was born and brought up in
Bangalore. She did her schooling and college from Bangalore
and earned a bachelor’s degree in Zoology in 1973. She earned
a masters degree in zymology in the year 1975.
She worked as a trainee brewer, a trainee maltster, a technical
consultant and a technical manager in various breweries. She
met Leslie Auchincloss, the founder of Biocon Biochemicals
Limited, Ireland who employed her as a trainee manager there
which ultimately led her know more about the business. She
started a branch in India named Biocon India in 1978, after her
return. She initially faced numerous challenges during its
inception which she faced courageously and spearheaded
Biocon's evolution from an industrial enzymes manufacturing
enterprise to an entirely integrated bio-pharmaceutical
company.
In 1998, she met John Shaw, Scotsman who assisted her well in
her career and married him whereupon she became to be
known as Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. She strongly trusted in

"affordable innovation" and this has been a driving doctrine
behind Biocon's expansion. She even searched for
opportunities to formulate cost-effective techniques to
manufacture drugs for cancer, diabetes, and other auto-
immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
Shaw started a corporate social responsibility wing named the
Biocon Foundation in 2004. It majorly focuses on the areas of
health, education and infrastructure, particularly in rural areas
of Karnataka for the economically weaker sections of the
society via the Arogya Raksha Yojana programme with the help
of Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital chairman, Devi Shetty. This is
a non-profit organization supported by two of its branches
namely, Mazumdar Shaw Center for Translational Research and
Mazumdar Shaw Cancer outreach program.
She contributed well in the field of education and has even
played a major role in improving India’s infrastructure. She
became the first woman to head the board of governors of
the IIM, Bangalore in 2014 .Currently, she is also an
independent director on the board of Infosys as well as a
member of the board of governors of the Indian School of
Business and a past member of the board of governors of IIT,
Hyderabad.
She has also won Indian and International awards in addition to
many honorary degrees.

McClelland’s Theory of Needs

This theory states as to how an individuals’ need for


achievement, power and affiliation affects the activities of a
person according to various managerial circumstances.
Need for Achievement (n Ach):
This includes those aspects of people who are interested in
finding solutions, seek challenges, ready to work hard and are

focused. Such people aim for frequent pay raise and get
promoted faster because they are mostly innovative.
Comparison
Mazumdar Shaw went to Federation University situated in
Australia to study malting and brewing which was a science not
popular among the females, then. This shows her urge to
achieve something new and innovative. She even topped her
class; this indicates her desire to be successful.
She even faced unforeseen technological issues associated with
developing such a business in India.
She used her earnings to buy a 20-acre property to expand her
venture .She being perseverant, led Biocon's evolution from an
industrial enzymes manufacturing company to a fully integrated
bio-pharmaceutical enterprise.
She aimed to raise capital to further develop Biocon's research
programs. Her belief in "affordable innovation" has been a
motivating philosophy behind this expansion.
She could develop cost-effective techniques and
implement lower-cost alternatives to manufacture drugs and
distribute it to the economically weaker strata of the society so
that they can afford the drugs they require.
"Innovation and commerce are as powerful tools for
creating social progress as they are for driving technological
advancement... when they are put to use for social progress,

the implementation is a lot cheaper, a lot more people benefit,
and the effect is more lasting.”-This shows her desire to help
the poor and improve their lifestyles.
She even implemented requisite measures to support
cancer research and treatment. Her active participation in Jana
Urban Space Foundation and Bangalore Political Action
Committee (BPAC), which reviews and recommends candidates
in running elections, shows her enthusiastic and optimistic
nature.
She is one of the current members of the board of
governors of the Indian School of Business and a past member
of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology
Hyderabad.
She also became the first woman to head the board of
governors of the IIM Bangalore and is an independent director
on the board of Infosys. These aspects show her ever ending
quest for achievement.
Mazumdar-Shaw has been awarded many international
awards for outstanding contributions in the field of science and
chemistry and her contributions in biotechnology have earned
her numerous national and international recognitions. She also
received an honorary doctorate as a credit to her contributions
to biotechnology.
Need for Power (n Pow):
Need for power is the desire to control others. They are
competitive and status oriented people. They love being

leaders. Top level managers, politicians etc., are some of the
finest examples of the same.
Comparison
 From the article, it’s clear that she is a dedicated soul and
her commitment towards her work shows her dynamic
nature.
 Her determination in opposing the orthodox mindset of
the people, widely prevalent then, enabled her to grow in
life. She took a different path and this shows her impulse
to do something new.
 She had a really tough time during the inception of the
organization as finding a new workplace and convincing
workers was indeed challenging. She was hell bent over to
succeed and make her venture a huge success.
 She is a lady of grit with a commendable attitude which is
evident from the instance of her being refused to offer a
job as that of a brew master only because she was a lady.
She proved all wrong.
 She is of the opinion that if there is a will there is away.
Her humble beginnings and determination to reach a
stature is something we should learn from her. She
believes that we are truly the creators of our destiny.

Need for Affiliation


Need for affiliation is relates to the desire for affection and
creating cordial relationships. Such people derive
satisfaction from being loved by the group. They are driven

by the jobs whereby interactions with colleagues are
frequent.
Comparison
Biocon has an employee friendly environment and
encourages collaboration, teamwork and respect for each
other. She considers her employees as the true assets of
the organization. She seriously considers the welfare of
her employees and colleagues and takes utmost care to
relieve them from extra stress and has created a balanced
work culture within the organization. She believes in
motivating the workforce and believes in value creation
through constant innovation and determination.
These are some of the factors due to which she is loved
and respected by her co-workers. This shows that she is an
effective leader and a successful entrepreneur in all
respects.

Locke’s Goal Setting Theory

This theory emphasizes that setting intriguing performance


goals and the commitment towards these goals are key factors
of motivation. Goal accomplishment motivates individuals to
perform even further.

Goals can be prioritized based on the degree of importance,
toughness and as to how it is to be accepted. These help us in
achieving success and to aim high. The acceptance of goals is
crucial and hence a deep rooted involvement in the goal setting
is advocated. The goal-setting has been integrated into a
number of incentive programmes and MBO techniques.
Feedbacks can help to enhance a worker’s job performance and
his/her innovativeness and creativity on the job through trial-
and-error methods. This theory has become increasingly
popular due to its simplicity.

Comparison
The major components of this theory are:-
• Set challenging but attainable goals
Her aspiration to do earn a degree in zymology, which
was quite uncommon amongst the women those days
shows her zeal in trying out something unique.
Her way of confronting the obstacles present in her job
in the form of credibility issues while starting a branch
of Biocon in India is noteworthy. She was determined to
achieve her goals against all odds.
Her initiative to make effective drugs for serious
ailments at a low cost by means of “affordable
innovation” could also be considered as a successful
accomplishment of the realistic yet challenging goals set
by her.
Her intention to expand the business to raise further
capital to develop Biocon’s research programmes was
also fruitful.

Besides this, she is widely considered to be an excellent
advocate of good infrastructure and governance.
One of her major goals is to establish a world-class
cancer center.
Her concrete contributions in the field of medicine,
education and infrastructure have also garnered her with lots
of accolades and recognitions.

• Set specific and measurable goals


Her goals, if we notice are not immeasurable or exaggerated.
Instead, she aimed high and achieved great. Her goals seem
impossible and farfetched for an unprofessional person. But
she with her consistent hard work and determination has
proved everyone wrong. She could definitely be a role model
for budding entrepreneurs of the present world.
• Goal commitment should be established.
This is an important aspect to be examined before setting a
goal- our commitment to achieve it. Goals could be set by
anyone with or without the intent of pursuing it.
Here, Mazumdar Shaw was keenly resolved in excelling in her
endeavor and establishing a steady base for Biocon in India. She
charted out feasible and smart plans for the attainment of the
same.
For example, her aim to find out cost effective techinique to
manufacture low cost and effectual drugs became a reality
because of her persistent efforts of along with colleagues.
Another thing to be noted here is her willingness to expand her
career in spite of various difficulties she encountered by on her
path to victory.

She has even sowed similar seeds of passion and drive
amongst her colleagues and employees which has enabled in
the propulsion of her undertaking in the right direction.

• Timely provision of support elements is required


Kiran’s father was a major source of encouragement for her
in her earlier days. He motivated her to study zymology and
develop a career in that field which ultimately revamped her
entire life. A banker emerged quite unexpectedly to provide
the her first financial support.
Her husband also provided her with timely financial
resources by personally raising $2 million to acquire the
outstanding Biocon shares from ICI.Narayanan Vaghul of ICICI
Ventures )also supported her in creation of a venture capital
fund of US$250,000 for the advancement of her business. Other
people who supported her professionally were Leslie
Auchincloss, Narayana Murthy and Dr Devi Shetty.
• Knowledge of results is important
Last but not the least, it’s essential for us to know the results of
our performance. Only then can we correctly evaluate it and
improve our execution.
Her relentless pursuit towards excellence helped her business
flourish. There are numerous factors that point out the positive
results as a result of insightful moves. Some of them are :-
a) Establishment of Syngene and Clinigene focused on
clinical research trial runs and the development of both

generic and new drugs. Clinigene was later merged with
Syngene. Syngene was listed on BSE/NSE in 2015 and has a
current market ceiling of US$1.15 billion.This was one of
her victorious moves.
b) The funds received from ICICI Ventures enabled Biocon to
expand its research and development attempts. A new
plant was constructed featuring proprietary solid substrate
fermentation technology based on a semi-automated tray
culture process, influenced by Japanese techniques as a
result of which Biocon became the first Indian biotech
company to given US funding for proprietary technologies.
c) Biocon's IPO was oversubscribed 33 times and its first day
at the stock market closed with a market value of $1.11
billion, making Biocon only the second Indian company to
cross the $1-billion mark on the day of inception.
d) Her concept of “affordable innovation” has brightened the
lives of many.Supply of effective drugs at low cost was a
huge success. The Biocon Foundation is also deeply
involved in a number of health and education programmes
aimed at benefitting the economically weaker stratas of
the society.
e) Mazumdar-Shaw considers that it’s the need of the hour
to improve India's infrastructure by means efficient
governance, job creation, and enough supply of food,
water, health and security.

f) She has also supported development and use of a basic
mathematics textbook, introduced in schools of Karnataka
in the year 2006.This was yet another important input of
her’s in the field of education in India which yielded
positive results.
Her active participation and involvement in various
spheres won her multiple recognitions and privilages.
