Present simple

You can compare the present simple tense with the Präsens-Form in German. We use this
tense to describe states, routines, timetables and regular activities.

A. Regular verbs

Remember: The verbs in English are unchanging, except for the 3rd person singular there is a “s” at
the end.

Regular verbs but special 3rd person singular “s”


 Verbs ending in o, ch, sh, ss, x and z: ending in “es”

 Verbs ending in a consonant + y: ending in “ies”

 But: Verbs ending in a vowel + y: ending normal “s”

Questions and answers with regular verbs

Remember: In present simple for negative sentences, questions and answers we need the auxiliary
verb (=Hilfsverb) “do”.

B. The irregular verb “to be”

Remember: The verb “be” is irregular and doesn’t need an auxiliary verb to build negative
sentences, questions or short answers.
