1, The thermometer shall be standardized atthe ice point and a intervals of approximately 50°C (100°F) for 25 mm (1 ind
jmmersion and forthe following temperatures of che emergent mezcury column according to Table 1
2, The thecmomeccershll be standardized atthe ie point if posible, and at intervals of about 20°C (40°F). Use the specified
immersion and record the remperatute of the emergent colurmn of mercury at each calibration point. The standardization is
valid for dhe stem cemperatutes found in your laboratory.
In keeping with good laboratory practice ll Inboratory thermometers should be calibrated against a National Institute
of Standards & Technology (NIST) certified thermometer. The calibrated laboratory thermometers should be tagged and
fiumbered. A laboratory thermometer calibration chart, showing the thermometer numb, locaton, use inthe laboratory
and the necessary corrections, should be maintained. A copy ofthe NIST certfcae forthe certified thermometer should be
ikepe with the laboratory calibration char.
3. Thermometers 88°C and 88°F are usually aor standard stock items. They may have to be specially ordered, requiring a
delivery time of up o 6 wk. One supplier is VWR Scientific
