Cheese rolling
Why do people run down an impossibly steep hill* after a large round cheese? This is a traditional event
held at Cooper’s Hill near the village of Brockworth in the UK which takes place once a year on a
Monday in May.There are four races down the hill and three going up. Anyone can participate and people
come from all over the world. Last year’s winner of the ladies’ category was from New Zealand.
5 After the first few metres the hill has an almost vertical slope so the competitors virtually fall down
after the cheese. Traditionally the master of ceremonies calls ‘One to be ready, two to be steady, three to
prepare... and four to be off!’ The competitors cannot start until they hear the word ‘four’. The winner
is the person who gets to the bottom of the hill first - who knows what happens to the cheese! The
uphill races don’t follow a rolling cheese and are for boys, girls and mixed adults in three categories. The
10 winners of the races each get a small cheese as a prize.
The cheese weighs between 3 and 4 kilos and is specially made for the event. During World War II, when
food was rationed, they used a wooden substitute ‘cheese’ with a small piece of cheese inside.
This is a family event. After the races, sweets are thrown down the hill for children to collect. The
organisers are all volunteers and there are ambulances waiting to look after the injured - occasionally
15 someone goes to hospital, but in general people are not seriously hurt after rolling down the hill.
