TIPS
1 Sea Caves
“You can’t come to Cyprus without
visiting the sea caves near Ayia Napa. Go early
in the morning when it’s cooler – the sea will
be calmer and you’ll have the place to yourself
before groups of tourists arrive. It’s beautiful
– the water is an impossibly bright turquoise,
and you can climb down into one of the bigger
caves easily for photos. To see the caves from
the water, it’s best to join a boat tour, where
you’ll also get a view of all the daredevils
jumping 10m from the rocks into the water.”
2 Makronissos Beach
“Cyprus has the best range of beaches
anywhere in the world, from picturesque sea
cliffs to wide stretches of sand and everything
in between. If you want sand, head to
Makronissos Beach on the southeastern coast.
For me, it’s the best beach in Ayia Napa – soft
golden sands, warm turquoise water, the
whole shebang. And if you want a real local
experience, take a watermelon and eat it on
the beach with slices of fresh halloumi cheese.
That’s the taste of Cyprus.” and other conditions that made the

just the ability to swim. The feeling of

Alongside his instructor role at
Kahuna, Liam also works at a children’s

he’s constantly exploring the island’s

4 Troodos Mountains
“The Troodos Mountains sit in the
centre of Cyprus and are spectacular. There
are countless hiking trails and waterfalls to
discover and it’s a great place to explore in the
summer when you’ll be glad of the cooler air
and a dip in a fresh waterfall. The highest peak
is Mount Olympus, which is 1,952m – you can
snowboard there from December until April.
In Cyprus you can snowboard in the morning
and then within 45 minutes be swimming in
the warm sea! The mountains are also home
to lots of traditional villages worth exploring.
In Kato Lefkara you can see people making
delicate Cypriot lace, while Kato Drys is a really
pretty little village that hosts its own music
festival every summer (1-3 Aug, fengaros.com).”
5 Zorbas Bakery
“My friends will laugh at me for
recommending this, but Zorbas (zorbas.com.
cy/en) is a Cypriot institution that’s been
around for more than 40 years. It’s a chain of
bakeries dotted across the island that are open
24 hours a day and sell fresh pastries, coffees,
sandwiches and desserts. Everyone who visits
says they need one in their home town – it’s
just good, fresh, affordable food, and it’s
a great place to go and stock up on snacks
before an afternoon on the beach. They also
make traditional Greek and Cypriot pastries
such as spanakopita (a spinach and feta filo
pastry pie) and kataifi (shredded filo pastry
strands with nuts and soaked in sugar syrup).”

7 Kahuna Surfhouse
“This is where I work as a kitesurfing
instructor (kahunasurfhouse.eu). It’s a family
affair because it’s owned by my sister and
brother-in-law – we all fell in love with
kitesurfing years ago, and the conditions
in Cyprus are perfect for it. It’s located on
Softades Beach, about a 15-minute drive from
Larnaca. People can come for a taster session,
or a course of lessons, and the whole beach
is dedicated to kitesurfers, although we also
offer stand-up paddleboard lessons nearby.
There’s always a really buzzy atmosphere –
even when you’re not in the water you can be
drinking a frappé (iced coffee) and hanging
out with Axl Rose, the resident dog. He’s the
coolest character for miles.”

hese days, taking the train is
something people do on a daily basis,
but in Athens 150 years ago it was
groundbreaking. When the Athens
to Piraeus train line opened in 1869,
it was the first railway in the whole of Greece,
and passengers on the inaugural trip between the
capital and its coastal limits included Greece’s
queen, prime minister and other dignitaries. Built
by British contractor Edward Pickering, whose
other projects included railways on the island of
Jersey and in South Africa, the line was seen as a
milestone in Greece’s industrial progress. Sixteen
years later it was extended underground, in a
move that terrified many Athenians who were
afraid of not emerging back to safety “from the
innards of the Earth”.
Fast forward to 2019 and the M1, as it’s now
known, is part of a city-wide metro system,
much of it built for the 2004 Olympics. But the
Athens to Piraeus line still travels through some
of the city’s most exciting neighbourhoods and
attractions. We hopped aboard to explore the
city from its first ever train line.
PIRAEUS
For most visitors, a trip to Piraeus means one
thing: catching a ferry to one of the islands off
mainland Greece. Yiannis Hondrokoukis worked
at the ticket agency inside the train station for
26 years, taking breaks only for Christmas and
Easter Sunday. “We opened at 5am and closed
around 10pm at night. But,” he is keen to point
out, “Piraeus is much more than a springboard to
the islands.” He’s right. Spending time in the area

KALITHEA
When renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano
came to survey the old, dilapidated horse racing
track in Kalithea in 2008, he saw rubbish and
decay. But the Greek word Kalithea means ‘the
best view’, and that’s exactly what Piano decided
to bring back to the area. He was commissioned to
design the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural
Centre (snfcc.org/en), a futuristic glass-and-
concrete building that houses both the Greek
National Library and the Greek National Opera.
True to the architect’s ambition, he created the
best view in Athens – of the Acropolis, the Saronic
Gulf, Mount Hymettus and Piraeus – from its
seemingly floating roof terrace. The whole
complex, which opened in 2016, is worth
exploring, with its indigenous Mediterranean
garden, a tree-lined pedestrian esplanade, a wide
boating canal and an open space offering free
concerts during the summer months.

Eilat
Why it’s hot This southern Israeli port
city was recently hailed as one of 2019’s
must-see destinations by The New York
Times. Diving is a major draw here,
especially at the world-renowned Coral
Beach Nature Reserve – the country’s only
coral reef – where scuba fans can see a
kaleidoscopic array of parrotfish, butterfly
fish and giant shellfish. The city itself
also pulses with a vibrant nightlife scene,
especially at Selena (fb.com/selenaeilat), an
open-air club with legendary raves.
While you’re there Don’t forget to
charge your camera – Eilat’s spectacular
natural landscapes are (almost) out of this
world. With their red sandstone hue, the
huge mushroom-shaped rock formations
at Timna Park look more Martian than

Why it’s hot The largest of the Canary
Islands has been quietly undergoing a
transformation over the last few years. It was
recently voted one of Europe’s top destinations
in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards
2019. It’s hardly surprising: as well as the

sun, sea and sand that first made it a beloved
holiday destination, it has no fewer than five
Michelin-starred restaurants including NUB
(english.nubrestaurante.com), located in the
historic city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, as is the island’s iconic Mount Teide
(pictured, volcanoteide.com).
While you’re there Tenerife loves a beach
party, and the sessions at Monkey Beach Club
(monkeybeachclub.com/en) on Playa de Troya
every Sunday in summer are some of the most
raucous around.
Belgrade
Why it’s hot Affordable and edgy,
Serbia’s capital city has long been a
favourite with in-the-know travellers. Now
there’s an added incentive to visit as its
reputation for contemporary art continues
to grow. Last autumn’s art biennale, which
featured works by Yoko Ono and Ólafur
Elíasson, alongside local artists, attracted
global attention; this September sees the
opening of a major retrospective by the
renowned Serbian performance artist
Marina Abramović. Head to the city’s

Castellon
Why it’s hot The scent of oranges lingers
over this eastern Spanish city – it was
once the main producer of the fruit for the
whole of Europe, and the region continues
to be known as the Costa del Azahar, or
Orange Blossom Coast. Foodies especially
will be in heaven here: nearby Morella,
one of Spain’s oldest and prettiest towns,
is packed full of treats from local goat
cheese to truffles and honey. Alternatively,
head north to Benicassim: the town not
only offers some of Spain’s best seafood
but also hosts its famous music festival,
