• The 2030 Agenda consists of a Declaration, 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, a section on means of
implementation and renewed global partnership, and a framework
for review and follow-up.

• The Global Goals represent a “universal, transformative and

integrated agenda that heralds a historic turning point for our world”.
Our world is, and we all are, interconnected; and that achieving and
safeguarding prosperity and sustainability requires all of us. It is bold
and ambitious - 17 goals with 169 targets and 230 indicators can be

Post 2015
The Post-2015 process is the
result of the convergence of the
MDG and sustainable
development tracks. It was driven
by UN Member States and was
highly participatory in nature.
Diverse groups of stakeholders
have contributed their inputs into
the process during a series of
extensive consultations.

HOW?
Applying Multi-stakeholder Approaches
It’s all about perspective
“The [Post-2015] Dialogues call
for governments to create
spaces and mechanisms for
engagement, not only as a way
to strengthen people’s basic
political rights but also because
it helps to create better policies
and generate better
development outcomes.”
Initial Multi-stakeholder Engagement
for Increasing Public Awareness of The
2030 Agenda and SDGs
• For increasing public awareness of The 2030 Agenda and SDGs
Multi-stakeholder Approaches
A.Working with formal local councils or forums
on SDG review
B. Multi-stakeholder dialogue
C.Fostering public-private partnerships
Working with Local Councils or Forums
on SDG Review and Implementation
• For reviewing existing plans for alignment with the SDGs
The starting point
• Stakeholders have collectively
made the call “for governments to
create spaces and mechanisms for
engagement.”
• In some countries these ‘spaces’
have already been institutionalized
as some type of formal multi-
stakeholder council or similar body
• In the Philippines, Local
Development Councils are existing
Case Example - National

• Since 2001, the German

Chancellor renews the Council
every three years and
mandates 15 Members • In 2014 the German Government asked
representing all parts of the Council to assess how a national
implementation of the SDGs will impact
society. the structures and institutions of
Germany’s sustainability policy.
• Leads stakeholder engagement • The Council responded in 2015 by
processes around important engaging experts in and outside of
government and submitted its statement
sustainability issues (i.e., the to the federal government on ‘Germany’s
“Energiewende”) Sustainability Architecture and the SDGs’.
Guidance on multi-stakeholder
dialogue

• To assist with the process of engagement

INCLUSION
• Efforts should be made to open the
consultations to all stakeholders in
the country who will be affected by
the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development
• …with particular focus on effectively
involving those who are commonly
underrepresented or marginalized in
decision-making processes
ACCOUNTABILITY
• Efforts should also be made to ensure that people
who participate in the consultations have access
to relevant information and can provide feedback
and influence the results and the process of the
consultations.
• More specifically, a critical aspect of
accountability in any kind of consultation process
has to do with who controls the information that
is generated, how that information is analysed
and how it is subsequently used.
• Another very important aspect of accountability is
transparency — not just about how the results of
the consultation are arrived at, but also
transparency in how the consultation itself will
relate to the wider process of decision-making
about the 2030 Agenda.
Fostering public-private partnerships

• To leverage the ingenuity, scaling-up ability, and

investment potential of business.
The starting point

• Businesses around the world

have experience with integrating
sustainable development and
corporate social responsibility
(CSR) principles into planning
and reporting practices
Case Example
The SDG Compass for
Business
Outlines why the SDGs matter to
business:
 Identifying future business
opportunities
 Enhancing the value of
corporate sustainability
 Strengthening stakeholder
relations and keeping the pace
with policy developments
 Stabilizing societies and markets
 Using a common language and
shared purpose

Multi-stakeholdership in Goal 17 emphasizes
target 17.17:
• Encourage and promote effective public, private-
public and civil society partnerships, building on the
experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships.
