Guide Questions:
1.What is a function?
2.How do you identify the domain and range of functions?
3.How do you determine if the set of ordered pairs represents a
function or not?
4.How do you determine if the mapping represents a function or not?
5.How do you determine if the graph represents a function?

3
What is a
function?
What is a function?
A function is a relation in
which every input is paired
with exactly one output.

5
How do you
identify the
domain and
range of
functions?
{(0, 5), (1, 4), ( 2, 3), ( 3, 2), (4, 1), (5, 0)}

•What is the domain?

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
What is the range?
{-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0}
7
How do you
determine if the set
of ordered pairs
represents a
function or not?
•Focus on the x-coordinates when given a relation.

If the set of ordered pairs have different x-

coordinates, it is a FUNCTION.
If the set of ordered pairs have same x-
coordinates, it is NOT A FUNCTION.
•Y-coordinates have no bearing in determining functions

9
Example
{(0, 5), (1, 4), (2, 3), ( 3, 2), (4, 1), (5, 0)}

•Is this a function?

•Hint: Look only at the x-coordinates

YES

10
Example
{(–1, 7), (1, 0), ( 2, 3), (0, 8), (0, 5), (–2, 1)}

•Is this a function?

•Hint: Look only at the x-coordinates

NO

11
How do you
determine if the
mapping represents
a function or not?
Example
Which mapping represents a function?
Choice One Choice Two

3 –1 2 2
1 2 –1 3
0 3 3 –2

Choice 1

Example
Which mapping represents a function?

14
How do you
determine if the
graph represents a
function?
Vertical Line Test
Vertical Line Test: A relation is a function if a
vertical line drawn through its graph, passes
through only one point.

AKA: “The Pencil Test”

Take a pencil and move it from left to right (–x

to x); if it crosses more than one point, it is not a
function.

16
Vertical Line Test

Would this
graph be a
function?

YES
17
Vertical Line Test

Would this
graph be a
function?

NO

Activity 3: Functions as Representations of
Real-Life Situations

Solution:
Example 2. Tiki, a graduating senior high school student is a
“raketero” who uses his dancing skills in choreographing dance
presentations and performances. He charges each dancer 80 pesos
for the whole performance aside from his “meryenda fee” of 150
pesos. If we would like to avail Tiki’s services, let us determine
an equation “S” that will satisfy his service charges.

Solution: charge per dancer

= 80 + 150

service charge meryenda fee

no. of dancers
Example 3. Jojo sells pancit bihon in the school canteen. In one
day he spends ₱300 for his rent and for buying his ingredients
(expenses). If his pancit bihon costs ₱25 each (sales), create a
function of his net worth N(x) for every x pansit bihon that he sells
in a day.

Note: Net worth = Sales - Expenses

price of 1 pancit bihon
Solution:

= 25 -

expenses
Net worth

no. of pancit bihon sold

Piecewise Functions

Sometimes a function is defined by different

formulas on different parts of its domain. This function
is called a piecewise function.

A piecewise function is a function that is a combination

of one or more functions.
Example

O
monthly fee amount paid when all the
free text messages is
consumed

additional fee when all free text

messages is consumed
Solution:
The input value is the distance and the output value is the cost
of the tricycle fare.

the first 4
kilometers
amount paid when the
distance traveled exceed 4

Activity 4: Exercise in Model Making
Direction: Model each situation.

Application 1.
Oscar wants to enclose a rectangular portion of his
field with 120 meters of chicken wire. Express the
area of the rectangular field that he can enclose.

Application 2.
A videoke machine can be rented for ₱1000 for three
days, but for the fourth day onwards, an additional
cost of ₱400 per day is added. Represent the cost of
renting a videoke machine as a piecewise function of
the number of days it is rented.

Activity 5. Model Making
Direction: Model each situation. Upload your answers in google classroom.
1.The fee for hiring a guide to explore the beauty of Laoag City is ₱700. A
guide can only take care of a maximum of 4 persons, and additional guides
can be hired as needed. Represent the cost of hiring guides as a function of
the number of tourists who wish to explore the city.
2.The cost of hiring Michael’s Catering Service to serve food for a party is
₱150 per head for 20 person or less, ₱130 per head for 21 to 50 persons, and
₱110 per head for 51 to 100 persons. For more than persons, the cost is at
₱100 per head. Represent the total cost as a piecewise function of the
number of attendees of the party.
3.A tricycle ride in Laoag City during this Covid-19 pandemic costs ₱20.00
per head for the first 4 kilometers, and each additional integer kilometer
adds P2.00 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the tricycle
fare in terms of the distance d in kilometers.
