SECTION 15686
AIR COOLED SCROLL WATER CHILLERS

PART 1 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions,
and Division 1 Specification Sections apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes packaged, scroll water chillers.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. General: Submit each item in this Article according to the Conditions of the Contract and Division I
Specification Sections.
B. Product data for each chiller, including chiller refrigerant, chiller capacity, minimum and maximum
chilled water flows, weights (shipping, installed and operating), furnished accessories and electrical
characteristics.
C. Unit wiring diagrams including requirements for power field wiring connections.
D. Schematic wiring diagram of control system indicating points for field connections.
E. Wiring diagrams shall delineate field and factory wiring.
F. Operation and maintenance data to be included in Operation and Maintenance manuals.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. ARI Compliance: Rate chiller according to ARI 550/590 “Standard For Water Chilling Packages Using
The Vapor Compression Cycle”.
B. ASHRAE Compliance: Conform to ASHRAE 15 “Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration” for chiller
design, construction, leak testing and installation.
C. ASME Compliance: Fabricate and stamp chillers to comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code, Section VIII, Division 1.
D. NEC Compliance: Comply with NFPA Standard 70 – National Electrical Code.
E. Chiller manufacturing plant must be ISO 9002 registered.
F. Qualifications: Equipment manufacturer must have five years experience with the equipment and
refrigeration offered.
G. Model furnished must have been in service for at least 2 years.
1.5 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer shall warrant all chiller equipment and material for a period of one year from equipment
startup, or 18 months from date of shipment, whichever occurs first.
B. Manufacturer’s Special Warranty on Compressor and Electric Motor: Written parts and labor
warranty, signed by manufacturer agreeing to repair or replace compressor and/or compressor motor,
including replacement of refrigerant for a period of 5 years after date of Substantial Completion.
1.6 DELIVERY AND HANDLING
A. Chillers shall be delivered to the job site completely assembled and charged with refrigerant and oil
by the manufacturer.
B. Comply with manufacturer instructions for rigging and handling equipment.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 APPROVED MANUFACTURERS

A. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide chillers by one of the
following:
1. Carrier
2. York
2.2 UNIT DESCRIPTION
A. Factory assembled and wired hermetic air cooled scroll compressor water chiller with air cooled
condenser, safety controls and operational controls. Unit shall have single or dual refrigerant
circuits.
2.3 REFRIGERANT
A. Material: R-22 or R-134a (varies by manufacturer); provide full operating charge of refrigerant and
oil.
1. Provide refrigerant charging port on each refrigerant circuit.
2.4 COMPRESSOR
A. Description: Hermetic, single or tandem scroll type with service valve, sight glass, crankcase oil
heater and suction strainer. Motors shall be refrigerant gas cooled and provided with thermal
protection on all three phases. Mount on vibration isolation pads.
2.5 REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT
A. Each refrigerant circuit shall include; liquid line shutoff valve, solenoid valve, sight glass with
moisture indicator, filter-dryer, pressure relief device, thermal expansion valve, and closed cell foam
insulated suction line.
2.6 EVAPORATOR
A. Evaporator shall be direct expansion, shell and tube with carbon steel shell and copper tubes,
refrigerant enclosed by shell, water in tubes.
B. Constructed, tested and stamped according to ASME pressure vessel code for 2068kPa (300 psig)
refrigerant side, 1034kPa (150 psig) water side.
C. Insulation: Shell covered with 20mm (3/4in) flexible closed cell foam insulation.
2.7 CONDENSER
A. Description: Seamless copper tubes with aluminum fins. Subcooling coil shall be integral with main
condenser coil.
B. Working Pressure: 3102 (450 psi).
C. Fans: Statically and dynamically balanced, direct drive, propeller fans constructed of corrosion
resistant material and arranged for vertical discharge. Provide fan guards of heavy gauge PVC coated
or galvanized steel. Motors shall be weather protected, three phase, 700 RPM, permanently
lubricated ball bearings.
2.8 CHILLER OPTIONS
A. Chiller shall be provided with the following options:
1. Low ambient control.
2. Epoxy polymer coated condenser coils.
3. Hot gas bypass.
4. Wire mesh coil guards to protect from hail damage.
5. Spring isolators for field mounting.
6. Pressure gauges.
7. Control transformer.
8. Building Automation System reset interface.
9. Factory mounted non-fused disconnect switch.
10. Chilled water flow switch for field mounting.
2.9 OPERATING CONTROLS
A. Provide manufacturers standard, microprocessor-based chiller control system in rain and dust tight IP
55 (NEMA 4) cabinet with hinged, latched and gasket sealed door.

B. Controller shall perform, at a minimum, the following functions:


1. Compressor start/stop.
2. Anti-recycle timer.
3. Automatic pumpdown shutdown.
4. Condenser fans start/stop.
5. Evaporator pump start/stop.
6. Evaporator heater.
7. Chiller operation -17.8ºC to 51.7ºC (0º F to 125º F) ambient.
8. Automatic reset to normal operation.
C. Controller shall have 40-character liquid crystal display in English and numeric data in English units.
Provide sealed keypad with password protection for operator interface.
D. Programmable setpoints shall include, at a minimum, chilled liquid setpoint, range, set daily/holiday
schedule for start/stop, manual override for servicing, low and high ambient cutouts, low liquid
temperature cut out, low suction pressure cutout, high discharge pressure cutout.
E. Display data shall include, at a minimum, return and leaving liquid temperatures, low leaving liquid
temp cutout, low ambient temp cutout, setting, outdoor air temperature, suction pressure cutout
setting.
2.10 SAFETY CONTROLS
A. Manually reset controls to perform the following functions:
1. High discharge pressure.
2. Low suction pressure.
3. High pressure switch.
4. Compressor motor over current.
5. Compressor motor windings thermal overload.
B. Automatic reset controls to perform following:
1. Low ambient temperature.
2. Low leaving chilled water temperature.
3. Under voltage.
4. Chilled water flow from field flow switch.
C. Alarm Contract
1. Low ambient temperature.
2. Low voltage.
3. Low battery.
4. High discharge pressure.
5. Low suction pressure.
2.11 ELECTRICAL
A. Power panels shall be IP55 (NEMA 4) rain/dust tight, painted steel cabinets with hinged, latched and
gasketed outer doors. Provide main power connections, control power connections, compressor and
fan motor start contactors, current overloads and factory wiring.
B. Power supply shall enter unit at a single location.
C. Exposed wiring shall be routed through liquid tight conduit.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine areas to receive chillers for compliance with installation tolerances and other conditions
affecting performance and maintenance of chillers.
B. Examine proposed route of moving chillers into place and verify that it is free of interference’s.
C. Verify piping roughing-in locations.
D. Verify branch circuit wiring suitability. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory
conditions have been corrected.

3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install chillers according to manufacturer’s written instructions.
B. Install chillers plumb and level, and anchor. Anchor roof support to building structure. Anchor chiller
and vibration isolators to roof support.
C. Install vibration isolators according to isolator manufacturer’s written instructions.
D. Maintain manufacturers recommended clearances for service and maintenance.
E. Install piping connections maintaining clearances for service and maintenance of chillers.
F. Install flange or union connections at chillers.
G. Install flexible pipe connections for chillers mounted on vibration isolators.
H. Install shutoff valves at chiller inlet and outlet connections.
3.3 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
A. Refer to Division 16 Sections for wiring devices, wires and cables, and electrical installation
requirements.
B. Install and connect remote flow switches and remote chiller control panel.
C. Ground equipment.
1. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals, including grounding connections, according to
manufacturer'’ published torque-tightening values. Where manufacturer’s torque values are not
indicated, use those specified in UL 486A and UL 486B.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Manufacturer’s Field Service: Provide services of a factory-authorized service representative to
supervise field assembly of components and installation of chillers, including piping and electrical
connections, and to report results in writing.
1. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and
equipment.
3.5 CLEANING
A. Clean finishes to remove dust and dirt.
B. Touch up scratches in unfinished surfaces to restore corrosion resistance.
C. Touch up scratches in finished surfaces to restore finish.
3.6 STARTUP
A. Energize chiller and operate controls and safeties.
B. Lubricate rotating parts.
C. Verify that motor amperage conforms to manufacturer’s data.
D. Start chiller and verify performance. Demonstrate operation to Owner.
3.7 DEMONSTRATE
A. Startup Services: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to provide startup services and
to demonstrate and train Owner’s maintenance personnel as specified below.
1. Train Owner’s maintenance personnel on procedures and schedules related to startup,
shutdown, troubleshooting, servicing, and preventive maintenance.
2. Review data in the operation and maintenance manuals.
3. Schedule training with Owner, through Architect, with at least 7 days’ advance notice.
