AIR COOLED SCROLL WATER CHILLERS
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 APPROVED MANUFACTURERS
A. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide chillers by one of the
following:
1. Carrier
2. York
2.2 UNIT DESCRIPTION
A. Factory assembled and wired hermetic air cooled scroll compressor water chiller with air cooled
condenser, safety controls and operational controls. Unit shall have single or dual refrigerant
circuits.
2.3 REFRIGERANT
A. Material: R-22 or R-134a (varies by manufacturer); provide full operating charge of refrigerant and
oil.
1. Provide refrigerant charging port on each refrigerant circuit.
2.4 COMPRESSOR
A. Description: Hermetic, single or tandem scroll type with service valve, sight glass, crankcase oil
heater and suction strainer. Motors shall be refrigerant gas cooled and provided with thermal
protection on all three phases. Mount on vibration isolation pads.
2.5 REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT
A. Each refrigerant circuit shall include; liquid line shutoff valve, solenoid valve, sight glass with
moisture indicator, filter-dryer, pressure relief device, thermal expansion valve, and closed cell foam
insulated suction line.
2.6 EVAPORATOR
A. Evaporator shall be direct expansion, shell and tube with carbon steel shell and copper tubes,
refrigerant enclosed by shell, water in tubes.
B. Constructed, tested and stamped according to ASME pressure vessel code for 2068kPa (300 psig)
refrigerant side, 1034kPa (150 psig) water side.
C. Insulation: Shell covered with 20mm (3/4in) flexible closed cell foam insulation.
2.7 CONDENSER
A. Description: Seamless copper tubes with aluminum fins. Subcooling coil shall be integral with main
condenser coil.
B. Working Pressure: 3102 (450 psi).
C. Fans: Statically and dynamically balanced, direct drive, propeller fans constructed of corrosion
resistant material and arranged for vertical discharge. Provide fan guards of heavy gauge PVC coated
or galvanized steel. Motors shall be weather protected, three phase, 700 RPM, permanently
lubricated ball bearings.
2.8 CHILLER OPTIONS
A. Chiller shall be provided with the following options:
1. Low ambient control.
2. Epoxy polymer coated condenser coils.
3. Hot gas bypass.
4. Wire mesh coil guards to protect from hail damage.
5. Spring isolators for field mounting.
6. Pressure gauges.
7. Control transformer.
8. Building Automation System reset interface.
9. Factory mounted non-fused disconnect switch.
10. Chilled water flow switch for field mounting.
2.9 OPERATING CONTROLS
A. Provide manufacturers standard, microprocessor-based chiller control system in rain and dust tight IP
55 (NEMA 4) cabinet with hinged, latched and gasket sealed door.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine areas to receive chillers for compliance with installation tolerances and other conditions
affecting performance and maintenance of chillers.
B. Examine proposed route of moving chillers into place and verify that it is free of interference’s.
C. Verify piping roughing-in locations.
D. Verify branch circuit wiring suitability. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory
conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install chillers according to manufacturer’s written instructions.
B. Install chillers plumb and level, and anchor. Anchor roof support to building structure. Anchor chiller
and vibration isolators to roof support.
C. Install vibration isolators according to isolator manufacturer’s written instructions.
D. Maintain manufacturers recommended clearances for service and maintenance.
E. Install piping connections maintaining clearances for service and maintenance of chillers.
F. Install flange or union connections at chillers.
G. Install flexible pipe connections for chillers mounted on vibration isolators.
H. Install shutoff valves at chiller inlet and outlet connections.
3.3 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
A. Refer to Division 16 Sections for wiring devices, wires and cables, and electrical installation
requirements.
B. Install and connect remote flow switches and remote chiller control panel.
C. Ground equipment.
1. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals, including grounding connections, according to
manufacturer'’ published torque-tightening values. Where manufacturer’s torque values are not
indicated, use those specified in UL 486A and UL 486B.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Manufacturer’s Field Service: Provide services of a factory-authorized service representative to
supervise field assembly of components and installation of chillers, including piping and electrical
connections, and to report results in writing.
1. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and
equipment.
3.5 CLEANING
A. Clean finishes to remove dust and dirt.
B. Touch up scratches in unfinished surfaces to restore corrosion resistance.
C. Touch up scratches in finished surfaces to restore finish.
3.6 STARTUP
A. Energize chiller and operate controls and safeties.
B. Lubricate rotating parts.
C. Verify that motor amperage conforms to manufacturer’s data.
D. Start chiller and verify performance. Demonstrate operation to Owner.
3.7 DEMONSTRATE
A. Startup Services: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to provide startup services and
to demonstrate and train Owner’s maintenance personnel as specified below.
1. Train Owner’s maintenance personnel on procedures and schedules related to startup,
shutdown, troubleshooting, servicing, and preventive maintenance.
2. Review data in the operation and maintenance manuals.
3. Schedule training with Owner, through Architect, with at least 7 days’ advance notice.
