IMPACTS

SHORT TERM

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

 Endangerment leading to extinction of species possibly endemic to the area due to overfishing
or other reasons.
 Loss of natural habitat for native species.
 Deforestation & overfishing.
 Pollution caused by construction.
 Loss of apex predator (e.g. shark) in an ecosystem, causing the collapse of the ecosystem and its
biodiversity.

HUMAN ENVIRONMENT

 Lack of natural wonders to visit due to overexploitation.

 Not enough fish to be eaten.
 Jobs lost due to lack of species.
 Countries who rely on tourism to fuel their economy will lose their main source of income due to
overexploitation of the tourism that they created (e.g. Hawaii, Fiji)

LONG TERM

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

 Complete use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources.

 Some cases of overexploitation may contribute to the growing problems of global warming and
climate change (e.g. the construction of tourist resorts and services to exploit the environment).
 Overexploitation is one of the five main threats to global biodiversity.
 Defacement of natural landmarks (e.g. mountains, oceans, lakes & deserts).

HUMAN ENVIRONMENT

 The effects of global warming, climate change & pollution will affect the human lifestyle more
severely.
 Loss of sources of electricity (e.g. fossil fuels) and overexploitation of the coal industry,
heightening the prices of electricity, water & gas and impacting hugely on the average human
lifestyle.
 Loss of resources (e.g. oil, food, water, trees) will eventually cause wars between nations over
that resource. Because of the necessity of the resources, the wars would be fought on a huge
scale, possibly starting another World War.

Some of the adverse effect of over-exploitation of natural resources and industrial revolution
are:
 It has led to the large-scale consumption of fossil fuels.
 It has led to large-scale mining of ores.
 It has led to pollution of air, water and soil.
 It has led to depletion of ozone layer.
 It has led to bio-concentration of harmful chemicals in the bodies of living organisms.
 It has led to large-scale deforestation.
 It has led to construction of many large dams in order to get hydro-power.

Overexploitation can lead to:

 BIODIVERSITY LOSS - us humans overuse the resources on earth, however, we don't realize that
we are capturing the lives of many living species. This also means that it takes a long period of
time for some species to reproduce, which can lead to loss of species.
 DEFORESTATION - is one of the most severe example of pernicious exploitation for our
environment. Increase in human's population resulted in a greater need of settlement. That
leads them to cut down trees for their own needs.
 According to National Geographic, the world's rain forests could completely vanish in a
hundred years at the current rate of deforestation.
 Deforestation can lead to:
1. Bearing on landslide
2. Earthquakes
3. Floods
 PROLIFERATION OF HARMFUL ORGANISMS - the increase in the amount of invasive species,
which can damage the environment, is caused by humans overusing resources.

FACTS

 52,177 described species

 BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT - Philippines continues to experience an alarming rate of destruction of
these important resources.
