Comprehension/Summary: Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then

Objective: To summarize texts and increase comprehension.


Materials: Fictional stories at a student’s independent level
Graphic Organizer
Data Collection Sheet

Sequence:
1. Tell the student, “ After reading a story we are going to use this graphic organizer to
organize the main events of the story. This is called a summary. I will give you five key words
that you will use to summarize the story. The words are somebody, wanted, but, so, then.”
“Somebody is who the story is about; wanted is what the character wanted in the book; but is
the problem in the story; so tells what the character did about the problem; then is the solution.”
2. Read a short story and model the process using the graphic organizer.
3. Walk through the process with the student and assist when needed.
4. Have the student read another story and independently fill out the graphic organizer after
reading.

What If I Don’t See Progress?


1. Model again using I do, we do, you do.
2. Use back up and reread and do one section at a time.
