Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Story Book

Content Area: Writing
Grade Level(s): 5th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE5W5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and
strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate
command of Language Standards 1–3 up to and including grade 5.)

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Publishing Opportunity

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I would first introduce the lesson by showing a BrainPop video on writing. I then would pull examples from
KidsPub for the students to view. We as a class, would go over each example and identify the topic sentence,
the body paragraphs, and the closing paragraphs. I want the students to be able to see what is expected of
them.

I then will tell them to think of some ideas to write about. It has to be original. I would give them a day to
think about it. The next day when they came in, I would ask them to begin writing. Once they are finished
writing, they are to have it reviewed by 3 people. One of those people can be in our classroom, peers or
myself. The other two reviews have to be done outside the classroom, friend, cousin, mom, dad, grocery
store clerk, etc. I want the students to get different opinions and fix their writing. Once their writing is in final
form, the students will then get on the computer and type their paper. The students will then upload it to
KidPub. I will encourage the class to go home and read a few of the classmates papers and come in the next
day and tell that person what you liked about it.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computer and Interactive White Board

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The collaboration will take place in and outside the classroom. The students must have their
writing piece reviewed by 3 people. 1 in the class room, and 2 outside of the classroom.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project: Students will be required to come up with their own
chapter book about whatever they would like to write about. It must be age appropriate and must be
an original idea.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are required to use higher-order thinking to get the job done. They
must create an original idea and give peers honest feedback.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The
students will take their final writing piece and type it. They then will submit it to KidPub to be
published.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☒ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson supports UDL by:
1. Allowing students to type-this could benefit those who have bad handwriting, slow writers, or those with
physical impairments.
2. Students are able to work at their own pace.
3. Allowing the shy kids to review their paper by someone they are familiar with.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: KidsPub is very safe for all ages of children. I
believe this will not pose a problem for my districts internet safety policy.

Reflective Practice: I feel as if the students will get something out of this lesson. I believe once they use
KidPub once, they are going to want to keep using it. Students are very reward driven and if they have an
opportunity to win a prize, they are all for it.
