This lesson encourages UDL by: 1. Providing visual, touch, sight, and hearing materials to those who may need them. 2. Each book will have auditory as long as words so that each type of learner will be able to use which sense most help them. 3. Students are encouraged to use their recording devices, so those students who have a hard time remembering can refer back. Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will introduce the lesson using a “classifying animals” video located on BrainPop.com (6 minutes). The students will watch this video. After the video, a zoologist will come in as the class guest. The zoologist will talk about what makes animals similar and different. The zoologist will also bring in animals for the students to see and feel. The students are encouraged to use their recording devices (iPads) to record the zoologist so that they can refer back to it (45 minutes). The students will then be able to pick if they want to do a PowerPoint/digital book on the differences or similarities between the animals. Each student is to work independently. I have provided an example of what one should look like. After the students have completed their PowerPoint, the teacher will submit each digital book to the Zoologist (2 hours). The zoologist will then submit the books to various zoos in the country. The PowerPoint can be featured in summer camps/programs to help students learn about animals and their differences/similarities. Reflective Practice: I believe this lesson will absolutely make an impact on the students. The students will enjoy being able to create their own book and hear themselves reading the book. The students will also remember seeing the animals that the zoologist brings in. In addition, the students will know that their books are out there and other students are learning from them.
