Comparative and Superlative forms

When to use them:

To compare two things, you need the comparative form with the expression “than”

For example:
Lake and ocean. The ocean is bigger than the lake
The lake is smaller than the ocean

To show that one thing is “the top”, “the best”. When you need to compare more than
two things, you use the superlative form with the expression “the”.

For example:
River, lake and ocean. The ocean is the biggest
The river is big, the lake is bigger, but the ocean is the biggest

How to spell them:

Adjective form Comparative Superlative

One syllable, ending in E. Add - r: Add - st:


Ex.: wide, fine, cute… Ex.: wider, finer, cuter Ex.:widest, finest, cutest

One syllable, ending with one Double the consonant, and Double the consonant, and add -
vowel and one consonant add - er: est:
Ex.: hot, big, fat Ex.: hotter, bigger, fatter Ex.:hottest, biggest, fattest

Only one syllable, with more than


one vowel or more than one Add -er: Add -est:
