THE CELL

OBJECTIVES

1. To prepare, examine and identify the parts of an animal cell.


2. To determine the metabolic processes occurring in each organelle.

MATERIALS

microscope glass slide with cover slip prepared / fixed slide


medicine dropper applicator stick / toothpick of skin cell
` pencil crayons

Reagents
Methylene blue solution
water

PROCEDURE

1. Secure an applicator stick and a glass slide.


2. Gently rub the inner surface of your cheek wall with the applicator stick or a
toothpick.
3. Transfer the sample on a clean glass slide. Allow to dry.
4. Add a drop of methylene blue to the sample in the glass slide. Allow the
stain to remain on the specimen for about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the
excess stain with water.
5. Allow the slide to dry and examine this wet mount under the LPO and HPO
of the microscope.
6. Draw the cell and label the parts that you see.
7. Obtain a prepared slide of a skin cell. Examine the slide under the LPO
and HPO of the microscope. Draw and label the parts that you see.
8. Compare the appearance of the cell in the two slides.
