Ithas been « month since the devastating fire at Churihatta in Chawkbazar took
81 lives. The suffesing of the people who lost theit loved ones to this fise is beyond description;
theie losses cannot be compensated. And more horrificaly, it seems that it will be difficult for
Bangladesh to prevent such disasters in future.
‘A huge fire has killed at least 81 people in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, as flames
spread through a historic, closely packed district of the city and fire crews struggled to bring it
under control. The blaze started in a single building in the Chawkbazar neighborhood but very
‘quickly spread to others as gas cylinders used for cooking exploded one after another. Fire officials
said many of the dead found themselves trapped in their homes by the rapid progress of the fire,
while some pedestrians were also killed when the fire spread to cars trapped in the area’s narrow
streets.
‘The death toll could yet sise further, with at least 50 more injured vietims and of
those at least nine critically buened. As of Thursday afternoon, the blaze was mostly under conteol
following more than 10 hours of frantic work from firefighters. Engines had struggled to reach
the area through traffic that was busy at the time, hampering theie efforts,
Conceptual Framework: This framework has developed for highlighting the fire hazards and to
explore the reasons and effective mitigation measures in the context of both household and
commercial sectors. The study tried to explore city dwellers opinion relating to effective fire
‘mitigation measures for Dhaka City. Fire Hazards reasons and mitigation system: There are various
number of reasons of fire hazards in Dhaka City. These reasons make Dhaka city more vulnerable
to fire hazards disaster, For most of the reasons here people are responsible. The common fire
hazards reasons are following:

Careless disposal of burning cigarette and match stick.
