Accessing the Model Files

Required model files are available online.


1. Go to Altair Connect or Altair Client Center.

2. Enter your user ID and password.

Follow the instructions at the website to obtain login credentials.

3. Select the required file package and download it onto your system.

Note: The files may require unzipping before proceeding with the tutorials. When
extracting zipped files, preserve any directory structure included in the file package.

HG3D-1000: Defining Waterfall Plots

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create waterfall plots.

Tools
The Waterfall panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

• From the toolbar, click the Waterfall panel icon,


Or
• From the menu bar, select Curves > Waterfall
The Waterfall panel allows you to create waterfall plots from XY force response data and
input pulses. If a waterfall plot exists in the current window, HyperGraph 3D automatically
fills in the default values.

Exercise: Creating Waterfall Plots

Step 1: Open Session File trimmer.mvw and create HyperGraph 3D


window
1. From the menu bar, select File > Open > Session.
2. From the 3dplotting folder, select the file trimmer.mvw and click Open.
3. Click Close on the message log that appears.

4. Click on the Add Page, , button to add a page.


5. Select HyperGraph 3D from the Select Application Menu icon.

Step 2: Create a Frequency versus Time waterfall plot


1. Click the Waterfall icon, , on the toolbar to enter the panel.
2. Verify that Frequency and Time are the options set under Plot Type:.

3. Click the curve selection icon, , in the Response Field for Data Curves:.
4. Choose the Force vs Time - Raw curve.

5. Click Preview to view the curve.

6. Click Select.
7. Verify that the curve referenced under Response is p1w2c1.
8. Enter 100 for Number under Waterfall slices.
9. Check the Contour waterfall option.

Step 3: Create a Frequency versus RPM waterfall plot


While in the Waterfall panel, do the following:
1. For Plot Type: select Input Magnitude instead of Time from the pull-down menu.
2. Under Data Curves, select RPM vs Time – Raw for Response

3. Select RPM vs Time – Filtered for Input under Data Curves.

4. Check the box for Input vector is in RPM to scale the RPM to RPS.

5. Click Apply.

6. Click Undo to return to the Frequency vs Time plot.

Step 4: Create an Order waterfall plot


While in the Waterfall panel, do the following:
1. For Plot Type: select Order(scaled) instead of Frequency from the pull-down menu.
2. Select RPM vs Time – Filtered for Input under Data Curves.
3. Click Apply to create the plot.

4. Click Undo to return to the Frequency vs Time plot.

HG3D-1010: Editing Waterfall Plots

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:


• Work with the Axes panel
• Query data
• Edit curve attributes
• Use the Edit Legend dialog

Tools
The Curve Attributes panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

• From the toolbar, click the Curve Attributes icon,


Or
• From the menu bar, select Curves > Curve Attributes
Plot attributes, such as style, color, and weight are in the Curve Attributes panel. This
panel also allows you to contour the surface and edit the legend, too.

The Coordinate Info panel can be accessed in one of the following ways:

• From the toolbar, click the Coordinate Info icon,


Or
• From the menu bar, select Curves > Coordinate Info
The Coordinate Info panel allows you to retrieve individual point data on any curve in the
active window. When a point on a curve is selected, the point data is displayed on the panel
and in a bubble in the graphics area of the screen.

The Axes panel can be accessed in one of the following ways:

• From the toolbar, click the Axes icon,


Or
• From the menu bar, select Annotation > Axes
Axis attributes such as labels, color, and scaling can also be modified using the Axes panel

Exercise: Editing Waterfall Plots

Step 1: Open Session File trimmer.mvw and create HyperGraph 3D

1. From the menu bar, select File > Open > Session.
2. Select the file trimmer.mvw, located in the 3dplotting folder, and click Open.
3. Click Close on the message log that appears.

4. Click on the Add Page, , icon to add a page.


5. From the Select application menu, select HyperGraph 3D.

Step 3: Working with the Axes Panel

1. Click on the Axes panel icon, .


2. Pick a color from the color palette for the X axis.
3. Change the number of Tics per axis. Note what happens to the values on the X axis of
the screen.
4. Click on the tabs for Y and Z axes, respectively, and change the colors of the respective
axis.

5. Click on the tab for Shading.

6. Verify that the Grid style: is Box and change the Grid line color.
7. Verify that the Axes lengths is set to Automatic.

8. Check the Lines option for Grid Style.

9. Change the Background color by selecting a color from the palette.


10. Go back to the Box option for Grid Style.

Step 4: Query XYZ Values Using the Coordinate Info Panel

1. Click the Coordinate Info icon, .


Note that a bubble with the XYZ values is seen in the graphics area.
2. Click on the surface to see the XYZ values at that point.
Note that the panel area displays the XYZ values of the point chosen.
3. Click Add Row to add an additional row.
4. Click on another point on the surface.
The value in the newly added row is updated to that of the new point.
5. Repeat the operation to build a table.

6. Click on any one of the rows in the table and then click Remove Row.

Step 5: Editing the Curve Attributes and contouring the plot


1. Click on the Curve Attributes icon, .
2. From the Curves: drop-down menu, select Waterfall.
3. Verify that the Surface tab is active.

4. Change the Display mode of the surface to slices only by clicking from the Display
mode options in the panel.
5. Change Opacity for the surface to Transparent by clicking .
6. Change the Display mode back to waterfall as a shaded surface.
7. Verify that the Contour option is active.

8. Select the axis in the pull down menu to select the X axis.

9. Repeat the previous step for the Z Axis.

Step 6: Using the Edit Legend dialog.


1. Click Edit legend.
2. Experiment with the following:
− Change the numeric format.
The format automatically changes in the legend box.
− Change the numeric precision.
− Change the number of levels.
The number of color bands in the legend box automatically changes.
3. Click on a number in the legend box and enter a new value.
4. Press ENTER.
5. The edited value is displayed in bold font. The remaining values linearly interpolate.
6. Add a header and footer to the legend.
− Activate the Header check box and enter text in the text box.

− Click the font button and change the font type and size.
− Click OK.
− Activate the Footer check box and enter text in the text box.

− Click the font button and change the font type and size.
− Click OK.
7. Click Apply.
8. Change the color of a legend band.
− Click on a color band.
− Select a new color.
− Click OK.
9. Change another color.
10. Interpolate colors between two color bands.
− Click Interpolate.
− Click on the first changed color.
− Click on a second changed color.
− The colors between the two selected colors are interpolated.
11. Click Apply.

Step 7: Save legend settings for future use.


Once you have completed your legend settings, you can save them for future use. Items
that can be saved are listed in the Save options section.
1. Activate the check boxes for the attributes you want to save.
2. Designate a file name.
Files are saved in Tcl format.
4. Click Save....
5. Click Default to return to the default settings.
6. Click Open... to open the saved file and load the previously determined legend settings.
The contour colors and legend are retrieved just as you saved them.

HG3D-1020: Data Querying

In this tutorial, you will learn how to


• Use the Data Query panel for Waterfall plots
• Plot the orders in the HyperGraph window

Tools
The Data Query panel can be accessed in one of the following ways:

• Click on Data Query panel icon,


Or
• Select Data Query from the Curves menu
The Data Query panel uses vertical cutting surfaces for viewing and plotting non-planer
cross sections. Surfaces can be defined by math expressions, specifying orders, and
selecting points on the waterfall plot or 3-D surface plot.

Exercise: Querying Waterfall Plots

Step 1: Open Session File trimmer.mvw and create HyperGraph 3D


window
1. From the File menu, click Open.
2. Select the file trimmer.mvw, located in the 3dplotting folder, and click Open.
3. Click Close on the message log that appears.

4. Click on the Add Page, , button to add a page.


5. From the Select Application menu, select HyperGraph 3D.

Step 3: Creating Cut Lines Using the Data Query Panel.


1. Click the Data Query icon, .
2. Click Add n from the panel area.
3. Select the RPM vs Time – Raw for Input and Time Vector.
4. Enter 1 – 6, for the Order List.
5. Check the Input vector is in RPM checkbox.
6. Click OK.

Step 4: Plotting the orders in HyperGraph Windows.


1. From the Data Query panel, click All next to the order list.
2. Change Layout: to One plot per cut.

3. Select the Two-Window Layout, , from the layout options in the Data Query panel.
4. Set the Create curve: options to Y-Axis Vs Z-Axis.
5. Click Preview to preview the curves in a pop-up window.
6. Click Plot Data to create the curves.
7. Go to the Waterfall panel.
8. Select RPM vs time for the Response field.
9. Click Apply.

Note that the plots in HyperGraph windows have been updated.

Step 5: Creating a new order and positioning them


1. Return to Data Query panel.
2. Click Add under Order List.
3. Left-click on an order in the Waterfall Plot to set its location.
Note that the location of the new order is shown in the Order list in the panel.

4. Select Order 1 from the Order list and repeat the previous step.

HG3D-2000: Defining Surface Plots

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create surface plots.

Tools
The Define Curves panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

• On the toolbar, click the Define Curves panel icon,


Or
• From the menu bar, select Curves > Define Curves
The Define Curves panel enables you to create new Surface plots. New data can be
mathematically defined using the program's curve calculator or entered as values.

Step 1: Creating a Surface Plot from a math expression


1. From the menu bar, select File > New > Session.

2. Click on the Define Curves icon, , to access the panel.


3. Select Surface from the pull down menu.

4. Click Add under the Surface list. A surface labeled Surface1 is added to the list.
5. In the text box rename Surface 1 as Math_Surface and press ENTER.
The new name is now displayed in the list and in the legend.
6. Verify that the Source type is set to Math.
7. Under Vector: click All.
8. Set X to 0:15:0.1.
9. Set Y to 0:15:0.1.

10. Set Z to sin(x) + cos(y).

11. Click OK to close the window.


12. Click Apply to create the surface plot.

Step 2: Saving the Session as session file


Curve_Attributes_Surface.mvw
1. From the menu bar, select File > Save As > Session.
2. Name the file as Curve_Attributes_Surface.mvw.
3. Click Save.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to:

The Curve Attributes panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

Surface attributes, such as Surface style, color, and weight are in the Curve Attributes
panel. This panel also allows you to contour the surface and edit the legend.
Surface List: The Surface list displays the names of all surfaces in the active window.

The Axes panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

• From the menu bar, select Annotations > Axes.

Axis attributes such as labels, color, and scaling can also be modified using the Axes panel.

Exercise: Editing Surface Plots

Step 1: Open session file.


1. From the menu bar, select File > Open > Session.
2. Select the file Curve_Attributes_Surface.mvw, located in the 3dplotting folder, and
click Open.

Step 2: Working with the Axes Panel


1. Click the Axes panel icon, .
2. Pick a color from the color palette for the X axis.
3. Change the number of Tics per axis. Note what happens to the values on the X axis of
the screen.
4. Click on the tabs for Y and Z axes, respectively, and change the colors of the respective
axis.
5. Click on the Shading tab.

6. Verify that the Grid style: is Box and change the Grid line color.
7. Verify that the Axes lengths is set to Automatic.
8. Check the Lines option for Grid style.

Step 3: Editing the curve attributes and contouring the plot


1. Click on the Curve Attributes panel icon, .
2. Verify that the Surface tab is active.
3. Change the Display mode of the surface to meshed by clicking from the Display
mode options in the panel.
4. Change opacity for the surface to Transparent by clicking .
5. Change the Display mode back to without mesh lines and to solid opacity.
6. Check the Contour option.
7. Select the axis in the Expressions = drop-down menu to be Z axis.

8. Repeat the previous step for the Y Axis.

Step 4: Using the Edit Legend dialog


1. Click Edit legend.
2. Experiment with the following:
− Change the numeric format.
The format automatically changes in the legend box.
− Change the numeric precision
− Change the number of levels.
The number of color bands in the legend box automatically changes.
3. Click on a number in the legend box and enter a new value.
4. Press ENTER.
The edited value is displayed in bold font. The remaining values linearly interpolate.
5. Add a header and footer to the legend.
− Activate the Header check box and enter text in the text box.

− Click the font button and change the font type and size.
− Click OK.
− Activate the Footer check box and enter text in the text box.

− Click the font button and change the font type and size.
− Click OK.
− Click Apply
6. Change the color of a legend band.
− Click on a color band.
− Select a new color.
− Click OK.
− Change another color.
7. Interpolate colors between two color bands.
− Click Interpolate.
− Click on the first changed color.
− Click on a second changed color.
− The colors between the two selected colors are interpolated.
8. Click Apply.

Step 5: Save legend settings for future use.


Once you have completed your legend settings, you can save them for future use. Items
that can be saved are listed in the Save options section.
1. Activate the check boxes for the attributes you want to save.
2. Click Save....
3. Designate a file name.
Files are saved in Tcl format.
4. Click Save.
5. Click Default to return to the default settings.
6. Click Open... to open the saved file and load the previously determined legend settings.
The contour colors and legend are retrieved just as you saved them.

The Coordinate Info panel allows you to retrieve individual point data on any curve in the
active window. When a point on a curve is selected, the point data is displayed on the
panel. Using the coordinate info panel you can retrieve data from three curve types: 3D
line, surface, and waterfall. The panel options change depending on the curve in the active
window.

The Datum Planes panel can be accessed by:

• Clicking the Datum Planes icon, , from the toolbar

• From the menu bar, select Curves > Datum Planes.

The Datum Planes panel allows you to insert reference datum planes to plots.

Exercise: Querying Surface Plots

Step 1: Open Session File Curve_Attributes_Surface.mvw


1. From the menu bar, select File > Open > Session.
2. Select the file Curve_Attributes_Surface.mvw and click Open.

Step 2: Query XYZ Values Using the Coordinate Info Panel


1. Click on the Coordinate Info icon, .
Note that a bubble with the XYZ values is seen in the graphics area.
2. Click on the surface to see the XYZ values at that point.
Note that the panel area displays the XYZ values of the point chosen.
3. Click Add Row to add an additional row.
4. Click on another point on the surface.
The value in the newly added row is updated to that of the new point.

5. Repeat the operation to build a table.

6. Click on any one of the rows in the table and then click Remove Row.
7. Click Export Table… and save the table as a DAT file.

Step 3: Using Datum Planes as Reference Planes


1. Click the Datum Planes panel icon, .
2. Verify that the Position tab is active and the radio button for Reference Plane is
checked.
3. Click Add to add a datum plane as a reference plane.
By default, a reference plane is created in the Z plane.
4. Move the slider bar in the panel area so as to move the reference plane along the Z
plane.

5. Click on the icons to change the orientation of the plane along the X and Y axis
respectively.

6. Click on the icon to create a plane with three points of your choice.

7. Enter 1 for the X, Y, and Z axis, respectively, under Location.


You can also pick three points from the screen.
8. Click Apply.
9. Click to move the reference plane to the maximum and minimum point in the
surface plots, respectively

10. Click on the arrows to move to the next/previous point or to the local maximum/
local minimum along the X and Y axis.

Step 4: Using Datum Planes as Clipping Planes and Plotting Cross


Section.
1. Create a Reference plane parallel to the Z-axis by selecting Rotate plane about X.
Move the slider bar to position the datum plane in the middle of the surface plot.
2. Check the radio button for Clipping Plane to make it active.
3. Activate Transparency.
The clipped part of the surface plot appears transparent on the screen.
4. Move the slider bar and note the change in the clipping area from the screen.

5. Turn the Transparency option off.


6. Click the Create XY Plot tab.
7. Verify that the option for Place curve on is set to New plot.
8. Set Create curve: to Y vs Z.

The Define Curves panel can be accessed one of the following ways:

The Define Curves panel enables you to edit existing curves and create new ones. New
data can be selected from a source file, mathematically defined using the program's curve
calculator, or entered as values. The options in the panel change depending on which
source is selected. If the source chosen is Math, the panel looks as shown below:

The Curve list displays the names of all curves in the active window. Curves can be
renamed, added, cut, copied, and pasted using the curve list controls.

Exercise: Defining Line Plots.

Step 1: Creating a line plot from a file


1. Go to the Define Curves panel, .
2. Click Add under the Curve list.
A curve labeled Curve 1 is added to the list.
3. Rename Curve 1 to Line Curve 1 and press ENTER.
The new name is now displayed in the list and in the legend.
4. Under Vector, select X.
5. Set the Source type as File.
6. From the dyna folder, select the file nodout.
7. Ensure X is selected for the vector.

1. Click the Add Page icon, , to add a page or press the SHIFT and F3 keys.
