Mechanical Testing of Rubber Compound

Resilience Testing – Part 1.3

Definition:
Resilience is the energy of recovery from a deformation. i.e. resilience is a measure of the ability of the rubber
vulcaunizates to return the energy used to deform it.

Scope:
The test is conducted to determine the heat generation in rubber compound when flexed. A resilient piece of
rubber is said to have a 'fast come back'. Resilient rubber compounds generate lesser heat when flexed, and
so are desirable for tyres and tyre treads, where high temperature due to generated heat tend to deteriorate
the rubber quality rapidly.

Testing Machinery and Standards:

Various testing machines like the Dunlop Tripsometer, Yourself Oscilograph, Luke, Impact Resiliometer etc.
are used for determine the rebound resilience

Advantages of Resilience Testing:

 To determine the heat build-up in the rubber compound. Lower heat build-up leads to better abrasion
properties of the tread compound.
