Brass Auditions 
 

Welcome to the Madison Scouts! 

The  Madison  Scouts  welcome  you  into  the  living  legacy  that  began  in  1938.  Whether  this  is  your  first  or 
sixth  time  with  the  corps,  we’re  certain  you’ll  have  an  experience  that  assists  in  your  pursuit  of  personal 
and  performance  development.  With  a  strong  tradition  of  focusing  on  the  vision,  values  and  goals  of  its 
membership,  you  can  be  sure  that  your  time  with  the  corps  will  be  well  spent. Have an incredible audition 
and enjoy this weekend with your Scout family. 
 
 

Your audition weekend experience 

Your  weekend  will  be  composed  of  a  mixture  of  visual,  music,  and  leadership  education.  During  these 
rehearsals  your  faculty  will  monitor  your  performance  and  take  note  of  the  progress  you  make.  Roughly 
halfway  through  the  rehearsal  your  teachers  will  pull  you  from  rehearsal  for  your  individual  audition.  You 
will  have  ample  time  to  warm  up  before  you  perform.  During  your  audition  you’ll  be  evaluated  and  will 
receive  individual  comments.  Regardless of the result of your performance, we expect each Scout applicant 
to  walk  in  and  out  of  the  room  with  confidence  and  poise.  In everything we do, we represent ourselves and 
the corps in the best light possible.    
  
 

Your standing with the corps 

At  the  end  of  the weekend you will be notified of your standing with the corps by the Corps Director. At 
that time, you will receive one of the following statuses:  
1) Contracted  -  will be responsible for starting tuition installments, fundraiser requirements and 
additional form obligations. 
2) Callback  -  focus  on the feedback they received with the goal of earning a contract at the next 
rehearsal.  Nearly  all  callbacks  go  on  to  earn  a  contract  when  they  come  to  the next rehearsal 
having demonstrated improvement in the areas of concern. 
3) Not  yet  ready  for  the  Scouts  -  those  receiving  this  status  should heavily consider finding a 
home  with  a  di erent drum corps. The corps director will assist you in finding another group to 
march with for the Summer. There you can continue to refine your skills. 


Required rehearsal items 

Mouthpiece 
As members are contracted, they will be informed of the specific mouthpiece that will be used for their 
section. Applicants who are not yet contracted will not be required to acquire any specific mouthpiece. 

Tuner and metronome 

You must have a tuner and a metronome at every brass rehearsal. Tuner applications on phones can 
be  e ective  for  individual  practice,  but  these  are not permitted items in rehearsals of the Madison 
Scouts  and  objects  of  substantial  value  are  not  a  good fit for the outdoor conditions of drum corps 
rehearsals.  Inexpensive  and  durable  combination  models  may  be  purchased  online  or  at  music

Three-ring binder 
This  manual,  all  distributed  music,  and  any  document  you  would  need  as  a  quick  reference  should  be 
printed  out  and  kept in your three-ring binder. Use clear sheet protectors to shield your music from the 
elements and enable quick substitution of replacements. 
  
Pencil 
It is extremely important that every brass ensemble member have a pencil at all times. Any changes or 
redefinitions should be noted down as soon as possible. The more details you document, the more details 
you will remember. 
  
Black towel 
The  black  towel  is  used  to  protect  your  instrument  when  placed  on  hard surfaces, especially outdoors. 
For  trumpets,  mellophones,  baritones,  and  euphoniums,  a  hand  towel  is  su cient;  tubas  will  need  a 
bath towel. It is a good idea to have an extra towel on hand in case your regular towel is mislaid. 
  
Red Coleman 1-gallon water cooler 
These water coolers must be completely filled with water before each rehearsal. 
  
Clothing 
Plain white tee-shirts without graphics and black athletic shorts must be worn at all rehearsals. Black 
full-stripe Adidas pants are acceptable rehearsal wear and are recommended for colder weather. 

  
Shoes 
Be  prepared  to  move  at  all  rehearsals.  A  properly-fit  pair  of  shoes  is  essential  for  keeping  your  body 
healthy.  We  highly  recommend  visiting  a  local  athletic  shoe  store  and  working  with  a  professional  to 
find  the  right  size/fit  for  your  foot.  The  winter  season  is  a  great  opportunity to break in your shoes for 
the  Summer.  The  higher  quality  shoes  you  purchase,  the  lower  the  chance  of  a  season-ending  injury. 
Sandals, shower shoes, flip-flops, or bare feet are not appropriate footwear for rehearsal. 
 
Baseball cap 
When  rehearsing  indoors,  hats  are  optional.  When  outdoors,  you  must  have  a  hat  that  keeps  the  sun 
from  your  head  and  your  face.  Visors or beanies do not serve the complete purpose of this requirement 
and are not appropriate rehearsal headwear. 
  
White gloves 
White  gloves  must  be  worn  when  handling  any  brass  instrument  belonging  to  the  Madison  Scouts  to 
help  protect  and  maintain  them in good condition. Gloves that are dirty or that have acquired holes will 
accelerate  the  tarnishing  and  wear  on  the  instrument,  and  are  never  acceptable.  You  will  go  through 
many  gloves  during  the  season.  Plan  to  clean  or  replace  them  as  necessary  so  that  the  gloves you are 
using at any time are always in good condition. These will be available for purchase at rehearsal.

- Instructions  for  the  box  drill  exercises  can  be  found  on  the  music  for  the  lip  slurs.  Pay  close 
attention  to  tempo, direction, and slide facings for each exercise. The quality of your playing on 
the move is a substantial factor in your audition. 
 
- The  audition  music  for  trumpet  and  mellophone  players  is  the  same.  We  may  ask  to  hear  any 
applicant  who  auditions  on  trumpet  or  mellophone  on  the  other  instrument  as  well  at  some 
point in the audition process. 
 
- Trombone  players  may  use  a  trombone  for  some  parts  of  their  individual  audition,  though 
everyone  must  also  perform  on  a  valved  instrument  to be eligible for a position in the Madison 
Scouts.  Decisions  and  assignment  of  trombone  parts,  if  applicable,  will  be  handled  once  the 
personnel of the section are set. 
 
- Tuba  players  may  perform  on  a concert tuba for some parts of their individual audition, though 
everyone  must  use  a  shoulder-resting  marching  tuba  for  the  box  drill  exercises.  If  you are not 
able to bring a marching tuba of your own with you the corps can make some available, but it is 
your responsibility to communicate and confirm availability of an instrument.
