English Debating Championship 2018

English Debate Championship activities are held in the framework of the student's
final activity on debate lesson by Sir Wongso and Sir Ian which aims to measure students'
ability or knowledge in this projec, the theme of this competiton is "Show Your Strength and
Share Your Knowledge" held on February 16th, 2018 at Muhammadiyah University of
Makassar.

There are four participating classes in this competition that is class BG.5E, class
BG.5F, class BG.5I and the last is class BG.5J. In this competition there are four participating
classes have been included as a participant of the debate competition and the debate
committee, each class is required to have a group that will participate in this debate
competition and the number of groups that follow this competition is eight groups that is two
groups from class BG.5E, four groups from class BG.5F, one group from class BG.51 and
one group from class BG.5J. In the implementation of this competition using five rooms
located on the 4th floor of the Iqra building at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar
consisting of four debating rooms and one hall where the participants gathered or the room
for the final round. The system of debate used in this competition is the Australasian
Parliamentary System and in each room that are two adjudicators.

In the first round class BG.5F failed to bring their representatives to the semi-finals,
the group that qualified for the semifinal was two group from class BG.5E, one group from
class BG.5F and one grup from class BG.5J. In the semifinal round, class BG.5E dominates
by bring two groups, semifinal round one group from class BG.5E against group from class
BG.5J and other group from class BG.5E against group from class BG.5F. After the semifinal
round, the group that made it to the final is all the group from class BG.5E and automatically
make that class as the champion in English Debate Championship. One mistake that is often
done in some groups is too often read the text either during the first round until the final
round.
My Argument:

1. Motion 1

“THBT Social Media Should be Banned”

Opposition

Social media is an integral part of today’s society. With loads of information being
disseminated over the Internet, social media has become the very fabric upon which our
society is being built. The people who are at the forefront of molding the future of social
networking sites are teens and children. For the past decade, social media has been as a
platform for youngsters to congregate online and interact socially as if they were in person,
regardless of their distance from each other. There are likely teens out there who do not
know of many other uses of the Internet other than their favorite social media platform.

I am very disagree about this motion because social media has brought many positive
aspects to life which would not have been positive before, for example you can contact
people far away that you might not have otherwise talked to.You can exchange valuable
information even though you are far apart geographically. You can also catch up on the
latest news. Social media can be a very good thing for opening up and maintaining lines of
communication. Businesses, individuals, and organizations can all benefit from this simple
means of communicating. So, social media can make people more informed citizens of the
country. This is important because by hearing from all parties about the problems the
world or the country is facing, they’ll learn how to form their own opinions.

2. Motion 2

“THW Reintroduce Corporal Punishment in School”

Opposition

I do not agree with this motion because Every parent who entrusted his children to
school would expect his son treated well by all school residents, especially teachers. In
other words, parents expect their children to feel comfortable in school. Schools can be
both homes, and teachers are expected to play parent-in-school in non-physical schools
that can cause problems for the child.
As experienced by 3rd graders of Klurak Candi National Elementary School on Jl.
Cokrohadiwinoto Klurak no. 63 Sidoarjo on Friday morning (15/09/2017), just because of
forgetting, not knowing or not following their gymnastics activity hardly punished by the
famous Sports Master. They are children in bullying, banging the table hard should not be
done to underage children. Because the fear of children hiding under the table and finally a
sports teacher menjitak / beat the heads of some students and also they are required to go
around the field 5 (five) times with squatting laughed at by all his friends at school this is
not including Bullying which by Government should prohibited and also against all forms
of Bullying. Not stop there the children are ordered to surround around the school with
pain and hold Trauma very deep. It is a sadistic punishment of this teacher in disciplining
children as they have grown up and entered the military realm.

3. Motion 3

“THBT is Never Appropriate for The Government to Restrict Freedom of Speech”

Affirmative

Freedom of speech is freedom which refers to a right to speak freely without

censorship or restriction but in this case is not included in the matter of spreading hatred.
can be identified with terms of freedom of expression which is sometimes used to denote
not only the free speech of speech, but on the searching, receiving and part of any
information or idea that is being used. although Freedom of speech and freedom of
expression are closely related to a freedom, yet different and unrelated to the concept of
freedom of thought or freedom of conscience.

Freedom of expression is very important to be guaranteed protection so that people do

not feel worried every expressed opinion or lack in government process. Freedom to
express opinions actually benefit all citizens and that government, from freedom to express
our opinions become more aware of what deficiencies and advantages in the process of
government / within us. Freedom of opinion is one of the efforts of fulfillment of Human
Rights based on the 1945 Constitution
