Lee* Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Dong-A Universi, 840 Hadan-dong, Saha-su Busan 60714, Republic of Korea Reccived 27 February 2007; recived in revised form 28 November 2007; accepted 27 November 2007 Abstract ‘This study examined the phase changes nitride precipitation, hea treatment, hardness variations and tempering effect of AIST 430 ferrite stainless steel after high-temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at 1050°C and 1100°C in a nitrogen gas atmosphere. The trong affinity between nitrogen and CCrenabled the permeation of nitrogen into AISI 430 ferrite stainless steel. The surface layer ofthe steel was changed into martensite + ferrite and ‘CeaN at 1050 °C, while martensite plus rectangular type retained austenite were observed at 100°C after HTGN, When the nitrogen-alloyed AISI 430 steel was tempered, the pret tation of (CrFe)N nitride and a secondary hardening effect resulted in an inerease in hardness 10 a value at 450°C. Above 450°C, nitride precipitation decreased the hardness considerably. The HTGN treatmet improved the corosion resistance, hile the precipitation of high density of CruN deteriorated the corrosion resistance.
