SPC Theatre Department Scholarship

Summary
Francis Phimphivong
I fell in love with theatre in high school. I felt like I had finally found a place
where spontaneous singing and dancing were not met with sidelong glances. I
knew theatre was an activity I wanted to pursue long-term, but I was led to believe
that there were not a lot of roles for people of Asian descent and that this would
be a difficult career path for me. I began to reconsider my choice. Working with
Scott Cooper encouraged me to return to theatre. True to his reputation, I have
learned so much from working with him in many theatre productions outside of
SPC, and I have been able to improve my skills and hone my talent. He is a
wonderful educator and has provided me with many opportunities. Being able to
take part in the summer production of Pippin would allow me to continue to make
all of those experiences worthwhile. The reality I have come to know is that
receiving great training and instruction often costs quite a bit of money. Receiving
this scholarship for the program would relieve some of the financial stress of my
day-to-day needs, thus allowing me to focus all of my attention on immersing
myself in this production so that I can provide a magical performance for our SPC
audiences.
