Keyword Research Core Formulas
Experiment: Can I rank for "Spencer likes honeycombs?" 5 years later, the
answer is still "yes":
A Quick Recap:
Pro Tip: use these tools to help you find pages with low link counts (page
links are links from external sites) that are on page 1 of Google. These are
typically weaker keywords and when you combine this with keyword
research, you’ll get results.
Keyword Competitiveness
Good Examples:
Bad Examples:
The Definition: Stealing keywords from sites rich in traffic, and creating
better content on your poor and less authoritative site
The Tools: SEMRush, Ahrefs, Long Tail Pro (Optional), Content Planning
Spreadsheet
The Strategy: Execute the Robin Hood Method by following this strategy:
Step 3: Find the lowest competition keywords (can cross reference with
Long Tail Pro
In the video lesson, we showed the Robin Hood Method using SEMRush.
However, if you prefer Ahrefs as an SEO tool, you can accomplish very
similar results by following these steps:
1. Enter a "doppelganger site" into Ahrefs and click the search button.
2. Click on the "Organic Keywords" to view the full list of everything they
rank for.

3. Look for keywords with the lowest KD (keyword difficulty) - "0" is the
easiest to rank for.
Pro Tip: Speed up the process by using filtering. For example, if you want
to see only keywords with volume over 1,000 and KD under 15, you can
add that filter.

5. (Optional) Copy/Paste your list of keyword targets into Long Tail Pro and
check the KC (keyword competitiveness) score to confirm it's a low
competition keyword.
6. Find a keyword you like? Dig deeper by analyzing the competitor's page
that is ranking for that keyword. Do this by clicking on the small arrow next
to the page URL, then clicking on "Organic Keywords" from the menu that
appears:

7. Decide which keywords to use as a primary keyword in your article, and
find other related keywords you may want to include as subtopics on the
same blog post.
1. Enter a "doppelganger site" into SEMRush and click the search button.
2. Click the button to view the full report underneath the list of organic
keywords:

3. Look for their top traffic-producing keywords that would fit well in your
site. Look for at least 20 keyword ideas and start copy/pasting them into
your planning spreadsheet.
Pro Tip: Use the "advanced filters" above the list of keywords to fine tune
your list. For example, to only see keywords with at least 1,000 searches
per month you could add a filter like this:
www.getwsodo.com
www.getwsodo.com
4. (Optional) Copy/Paste your list of keywords into Long Tail Pro and check
the KC (keyword competitiveness) score. Remember, if you're
doppelganger sites are low in domain authority, the fact that they can rank
on page 1 is usually enough to indicate that you could rank on page 1 as
well (assuming you create great content with solid on-page SEO).
5. Find a keyword you like? Dig deeper by clicking on the specific page that
your competitor is ranking with:
Then, click on "view full report" on the next page to see all the keywords
this page ranks for:
This report will help you determine which keyword should be your primary
keyword, as well as give you ideas about secondary keywords that you
may want as subtopics in your content:

When deciding whether you should a more long form, general blog post on
the topic or a really targeted blog post based on the keyword modifiers, turn
to Google.
You can know what kind of content Google expects by what is ranking
now.
For example:
www.getwsodo.com
www.getwsodo.com
Although I'd searched a pretty long and specific query, Google is showing
me very similar results in the top 3 as when I just search the more general
"best surfboard."
However, when I search "best surfboard for beginners I get these results:
www.getwsodo.com
www.getwsodo.com
The top article as well as several others on the page were specifically
targeting beginner surfers - which lets you know that in order to rank for this

keyword, you should most likely create an article that's dedicated to "the
best surfboard for beginners"
However, ranking for "best surfboards for the money 2018" doesn't
necessarily require a special article - you can just focus on the more
general "head" term of "Best Surfboard" and still have a chance to rank for
this long tail keyword as well.

Paid Tools vs. Free Tools
• SEMRush & Ahrefs let you explore keywords across entire domains
• SEMRush & Ahrefs also let you map and track competitors
• Long Tail Pro, Ahrefs & SEMRush all include options for Rank
Tracking
• Paid tools help you find and filter the best ideas quickly. So if you can
afford it, paid tools will produce better results more quickly.
Ubersuggest
Now owned by Neil Patel, Ubersuggest is still arguably the best completely
free tool available. Here are a few quick tips and reminders to make the
most of it.
You can get the most results by showing both Google Keyword Planner
and Google Suggest data, but you can toggle to only see one or both. The
same goes for word filtering, where you can quickly search to only see
keywords that include a particular word.

One of the most interesting ways to use Google Suggest is by entering the
beginning of a phrase or question. For example "can iphones" if you've got
a blog about technology to see what kinds of "can" questions people are
asking about their iPhone.
Another fantastic free tool is Answer The Public. Simply type in a keyword
or topic and search. You'll get plenty of related questions to sift through. I
do suggest changing your view to "Data" instead of visualization to get a
more user-friendly look at all the results:

Keywords Everywhere
This nifty little free tool will make keyword search volume and suggestions
show up on all kinds of places, like Amazon.com, YouTube, and even
inside the Google Results page:
Keyword Shitter
First of all, we didn't pick the name...unfortunately, this is what it's called
though.
It doesn't get any simpler that this tool. Simply type in a keyword and click a
button and it'll start dropping keyword ideas by the hundreds.
Tip: This works with Keywords Everywhere - meaning when you activate
Keywords Everywhere in your browser, you'll see search volume data
without ever leaving the page.
Moz is a paid tool, but their powerful Keyword Explorer gives you 10
searches per month for free. This includes their root domain search, which
means you can do a limited amount of competitor spying to see what your
doppelganger sites are ranking for.
KWFinder
Another paid tool with limited free access, KWFinder has a beautiful design
and is an excellent place to get some free keyword difficulty scoring on
those keywords you're on the fence about.
You get 5 free lookups ever 24 hours with the free account, and up to 50
keywords per search.
Use Ahrefs to boost the keywords you want to include in all of your
content.
Ahrefs is an amazing tool to look at all the keywords your competitors are
targeting in specific articles, and target those same keywords in your
content.
