Discussion

The findings in this study show how music truly affected the respondents
cognitive and memory performance. It proved that the person who listened to classical
music are more likely to remember things than to the person who did not listen to music
while we were conducting the experiment. The result gave a slight positive correlation of
the scores of both groups with r = 0.957. This supports that music can temporarily boost
the cognitive performance of the respondents. Same goes for the correlation per word of
both groups with a result of r= 0.583. This finding is consistent with what other
researchers have found (e.g., University of North Texas, 1982; Halpern, Andrea R. and
Daniel Myllemsiefen, 2009).

Conclusion

This study supports to the growing number of researches on how music affects
memory and cognitive performance. It seeks to provide another practice in terms of
reducing stress. Although there are some people who can’t memorize with music, one of
the main findings of this study is the significance of music in memorization. Music do not
only focuses on how it boosts memory performance but it is also beneficial in other
mental aspects like stress management. It is advisable to listen to music as a practice in
dealing with stress and studying purposes, for studying demands mental activity that
consumes overall energy. However, there are some people who are not fond of music,
because these people are having difficulties to focus on the activity that they are doing.
But since most people are fond into music, it is applicable for them to practice it and
make it a habit. Therefore, is it truly an advantage if we listen to music for better
performance to accomplish a certain task.

The scores of both respondents and their correlation are shown in Table 1.
And the correlation per word of both groups are shown in Table 2.
