RAM Pump

The greenest pump in the world

Why Ram Pump
• Greenest Pump in the world.
• No Fuel or Electricity needed to Operate
• Use Potential Energy of Water.
• Rugged, No special skills need to Install and
Operate.
• Minimal Maintenance.
• Can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365
days a year.
• Although very old concept, their use in
Pakistan is next to nothing.
• Huge potential exists in Hilly Areas.
Theme of the project

Technology does not

have to be complicated
to be useful
Introduction
• Water Supply Schemes in hilly areas have always been a
major challenge for government and non-governmental
organizations.

• The topographic nature of the hilly area

• The non-availability of reliable electric power and fuel

supplies

• Weather conditions and landslides.

• Repair and maintenance.

• The proposed solution is based on Ram Pump technology

Introduction

• A hydraulic ram, a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower.

• Hydraulic transformer: Transforms Lower Intake Head and High

Flow-Rate to Higher Output Head and Lower Flow-Rate.

• Uses the water hammer effect to develop pressure

• Most suitable for remote Hilly Areas, with plenty of free flowing
streams.

• Requires no outside source of power other than the kinetic energy of

water.

• There is a lot of potential for this technology in most parts of KPK,

Baluchistan, Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir.
Operating Principle

• Only two moving parts dictates the whole operation.

• Escape valve (impulse valve ) and the check valve.
• Other parts include Pressure Cylinder, Body, Intake pipe, Delivery Pipe
and sniffer valve.
• Once the water reaches its maximum speed, this Escape valve (impulse
valve) slams shut, thus creating a water hammer effect.
• The flowing water develops a great deal of momentary pressure in the
pump because of its momentum.
• The pressure forces open a second valve, the Check valve.
• High-pressure water flows through the second valve (Check valve) to air
cylinder and to delivery pipe.
• The pressure in the pump falls due to recoil. The Escape valve re-opens
to allow water to flow and build up momentum again. The Check valve
closes.
• The cycle repeats.

Factors in Design

Storage
D=(Q x F x E)/L

D= Delivery (Liters/min)
Q = Supply (Liters/min)
F = Fall (Meters or Feet)
L= Lift (Meters or Feet)
E= Efficiency (Between 50% and 60%)

Water Source
Factors in Design
• The difference in height between the water source and the
pump site (called vertical fall).

• The difference in height between the pump site and the

point of storage or use (lift).

• The quantity (Q) of flow available from the source.

• The quantity of water required.

• The length of pipe from the source to the pump site

(called the drive pipe).

• The length of pipe from the pump to the storage site

(called the delivery pipe).
Factors in Design

The formula is: D=(Q x F x E)/L Where:

D = Amount delivered in liters per minute.

Q = Quantity of water supplied in liters per minute.

F = The fall or height of the source above the ram in meters.

E = The efficiency of the ram ( varies between 40% and

65%).

L = The lift height of the point of use above the ram in

meters.
Factors in Design
• 2” Intake Ram Pump can deliver from 5000 liters/day (24 hrs) to
more than 15000 liters/day depending on Intake and Delivery Heads.

• Average use of water per person in rural areas is around 50 liters/day.

• One Pump can easily support a community of 100 to 300 people.

• Has been tested to lift water up to 300 ft with Intake Head of 12 ft

and 5760 liter/day delivery.

• Multiple Ram Pump can be connected in parallel to increase volume

of water.

• Large size (4” Intake) can be built for Irrigation purpose.

Conclusion
This presentation is meant to introduce
environment friendly technologies based on
Hydro Ram Pump and Solar to parts of the
country where it is needed most. In many parts
of KPK, Baluchistan, Northern areas and Azad
Kashmir, there is plenty of water streams, but
due to the cost involved in lifting water, most
people of the area can not take full advantage
of these valuable resources. With these
technology, these precious water resources
can be harnessed for both domestic and
agriculture use at virtually no running cost.
