PILE FOUNDATION OF BANGLORE METRO
INTRODUCTION:
Pile foundations consist of piles that are dug into soil till a layer of stable soil is reached.

Pile foundations transfer building load to the bearing ground with the greater bearing capacity.

OBJECTIVE & SCOPE:

A pile is basically a long cylinder of a strong material such as concrete that is pushed into the
ground to act as a study support for the structure built on top of it. Pile foundations are used in
following situation:

When there is a layer of weak soil at the surface and this layer cannot support the weight of the
super structure which must be transferred to the strongest soil or rock stratum below weak
layer.

Pile foundation is deep foundation which carries out the transfer of loads from the pile cap to
the soil. Depth of pile is decided on the basis of type of pile and soil stratum

NECESSITY OF PILE FOUNDATION:

1. Weak upper Soil:
2. Effect of horizontal forces:
3. Subjected to Uplifting forces:
4. When we have expansive soil in construction site

TYPES OF PILE FOUNDATIONS:

1. End Bearing Pile
2. Friction Bearing Pile
3. Compaction pile
4. Sheet pile
5. Tension anchor piles
6. Latterly loaded piles
7. Point bearing piles.
TEST ON PILE :
1. Pile Integrity Test
2. Routine lateral load Test
3. Vertical load Test
4. Dynamic load Test
CONCLUSION:
Piles are often used because adequate bearing capacity cannot be found at shallow enough
depths to support the structural loads. It is important to understand that piles get support from
both end bearing and skin friction. The proportion of carrying capacity generated by either end
bearing or skin friction depends on the soil conditions. Piles can be used to support various
different types of structural loads.
