JUDE lost her mother in last year’s stoning.

She’s been struggling at work and

with her family: she wants revenge on KARL, the man who threw the first stone
the year before, and the most hated-man-in-the-town.

Meanwhile, JUDE’s father ERIC has been trying to blackmail BILL into having
KARL win the lottery this year. On the day of the lottery BILL comes round to
find a final way to tell ERIC that it can’t be done, he’s sorry.

KARL then knocks on ERIC’s door to ask him to pay for the damage to his
window, which ERIC’s daughter smashed this morning, and his suspicions are
roused by BILL being in the kitchen when he arrives.

KARL goes to the driving range at the golf-club with his friend and all the talk of
the lottery makes him so anxious that he smashes up a vending machine with a
club.

He goes BILL’s wife ANNA’s work and asks her what’s going on with BILL, she
says he doesn’t know anything but he threatens her and leaves his number.

ANNA follows BILL to a hotel where he is having an affair. She talks to him in the
car-park and he admits that ERIC asked him to cheat the lottery.

KARL gets dressed-up for the lottery ready to expose the conspiracy.

He goes into a pub where JUDE is working behind the bar. They talk until the bell
rings for the lottery: she talks about her mother and tries to get him to apologise
and explain himself, he doesn’t and the bell rings.

When it comes round he gets up on the stage and says it’s all been a fix and
they’re out to get him.

Everyone agrees to open them and it’s quite tense. He doesn’t win but Jude does.
ONE

PHONE. KITCHEN EVENING.

ERIC Hiya Bill.

Oh, that’s an awful shame, Bill.

Is Anna there, could you put her on the phone, Bill?

No.

Ok.

No, now’s no good, Bill.

9 o’clock?

Fine.

Say hi to Anna for me.

Well, go fuck yourself also, Bill.

HE ENTERS THE ROOM, THERE IS A BIRTHDAY CAKE ON THE TABLE, LIT, AND
JUDE AND DAMON SIT AT THE TABLE WAITING FOR HIM. DAMON (11) LOOKS
SADLY AT HIS FATHER, JUDE (16) LOOKS DISCONSOLATELY OUT OF THE
WINDOW AND DOES NOT REACT TO ERIC’S ENTRANCE.

DAMON Shall we sing now?

ERIC Damon.

DAMON Let’s sing.

ERIC Ok.

DAMON SJude’s not looking.

ERIC You ok, Judy?

Pause.

ERIC How about no singing, Eric. How about you just blow them out?

JUDE Can I be excused?

ERIC No.

SHE EXITS AND WALKS UPSTAIRS.

SHE TAKE A PIECE OF PAPER OUT OF THE PRINTER ON THE WAY.

IN HER ROOM SHE WRITES ON THE PIECE OF PAPER IN RED MARKER.

SHE TAKES HER CARKEYS AND EXITS DRIVING AWAY FROM THE HOUSE.

TWO

MORNING. A WINDOW SHATTERS.

KARL WAKES UP. HE PUTS ON THE RADIO, AN UPBEAT SONG PLAYS.

HE OPENS HIS CURTAINS AND ONE OF THE WINDOWS IS BOARDED OVER.

HE STANDS IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKES BATTER FOR PANCAKES.

THERE IS GLASS ON THE FLOOR, AS HE PUTS FOOD OUT FOR HIS DOG, HE
STEPS OVER IT.

HE PICKS SOMETHING UP AND PUTS IT ON THE TABLE.

HE COOKS HIS PANCAKE AND PUTS IT ON A PLATE.

HE POURS HIMSELF A COFFEE, IN IT HE PUTS SIX OR SEVEN SUGARS.

HE LOOKS AT HIMSELF IN A MIRROR ABOVE THE SINK AS HE STIRS THE

COFFEE: HE SLICKS BACK HIS HAIR FURTHER, HE IS ABOUT FORTY-FIVE,
HEALTHY, ATTRACTIVE, BEAMING.

HE SITS AT THE TABLE AND BEFORE EATING HIS PANCAKE HE PICKS UP A

ROCK WRAPPED IN PAPER, HE UNWRAPS THE PAPER AND ON IT IS WRITTEN:

“I HOPE YOU WIN NEXT. “

HE SMILES, STANDS UP AND PUTS THE ROCK IN A CABINET IN THE CORNER

ALONGSIDE A HEAP OF OTHERS AND NOTES IN THE SAME HANDWRITING.

HE SITS BACK DOWN AND EATS HIS PANCAKE WITH LOTS OF SUGAR.

HE FINISHES THE PANCAKES.

KARL TOTO!

KARL TOTO!

HE STANDS UP AND OPENS THE FRONT DOOR TO GET THE PAPER.

HIS DOG IS DEAD ON THE DOORSTEP.

HE CATCHES SIGHT OF JUDE ACROSS THE ROAD, SAT IN A CAR, DRIVING AWAY.

HE PUTS THE DEAD DOG INTO THE GARBAGE AND WASHES HIS HANDS.
