A. Effectivity
(1) Problem: Certain tower shaft Self-Locking Bolts, Part No. 3050178-2, may back out
causing tower shaft spline disengagement resulting in loss of drive to the fuel pump
and engine shutdown.
(2) Background: Tower shaft Self-Locking Bolts, Part No. 3050178-2, have been procured
from two suppliers who utilize a single or double Vespel insert locking feature. Two
engine incidents have occurred with the single insert design resulting in in-flight
shutdowns.
(3) Action: This service bulletin introduces a new tower shaft Self-Locking Bolt, Part No.
3050178-3, with a mechanical (offset thread) locking feature.
C. Description
This service bulletin provides instructions for replacing the tower shaft Self-Locking Bolt, Part
No. 3050178-2 with Self-Locking Bolt, Part No. 3050178-3.

Recommended. Except as noted below, CFE Company recommends that this service bulletin
be accomplished at first access to all tower shaft Self-Locking Bolts, Part No. 3050178-2.
CFE Company recommends that this service bulletin be accomplished within 60 days after
receipt of this service bulletin for the the following engines which may contain a tower shaft
self-locking bolt with the single insert locking feature:

The change to the engine type design authorized by this service bulletin complies with appli-
cable Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA approved.
F. Manhour Requirements
100% labor credit allowance will be covered when service bulletin compliance is accom-
plished.

the time this service bulletin is accomplished during shop visit at an authorized CFE738
service center.

2. Accomplishment Instructions
(1) Remove the aircraft components necessary to access the fan rotor assembly and the
N1 (NF) monopole (engine installed on aircraft). Refer to the Aircraft Maintenance
Manual.
NOTE: Index the dash number of each trim balance weight next to the bolt hole
on the engine inlet spinner that the weight is removed from to help when
the spinner is re-installed.
(2) Remove the fan spinner from the engine. Refer to 72-70-01, Removal, in the Light
Maintenance Manual.
NOTE: Match-mark the fan shaft nut and the fan rotor assembly to the low
pressure turbine shaft with silver pencil (Berol Verithin, No. 753) or
marking compound (Dykem Hi-Spot Blue, No. 107).
(3) Remove the fan rotor assembly from the engine. Refer to 72-70-02, Removal, in the
Light Maintenance Manual.
(4) Remove the fan speed N1 (NF) monopole from the engine. Refer to 77-10-01,
Removal, in the Light Maintenance Manual.
(5) Remove the A sump assembly installation from the engine. Refer to 72-70-10,
Removal, in the Light Maintenance Manual.
(6) Prior to removal of the self-locking bolt, visually inspect if the packing on the upper end
of the tower shaft is visible below the bevel gear. (See Figure 1.) Make a record on the
CFE738 Self-Locking Bolt, Part No. 3050178-2, Removal Record Form.

NOTE: Match-mark the tower shaft to the bevel gear of the accessory drive
bearing housing and bevel gear assembly with marking compound
(Dykem Hi-Spot Blue, No. 107) before removing the tower shaft self-
locking bolt.
Use a fiber or plastic drift to hold the tower shaft in the engaged position
in the bevel gear of the accessory drive bearing housing and bevel gear
assembly while removing the self-locking bolt. If the tower shaft disen-
gages from the bevel gear during removal of the self-locking bolt re-
install the tower shaft in the same position marked with match-marks.
2. A. (7) Remove the tower shaft self-locking bolt from the accessory drive bearing housing
assembly and bevel gear assembly. Refer to 72-30-01, Removal, in the Light
Maintenance Manual and the following.
(a) Observe for break-away torque when loosening the self-locking bolt from the
tower shaft.

ENGINE STARTS:
2. Remove the tower shaft self-locking bolt. Does the self-locking bolt have break-away torque? (It
is not required to record value of break-away torque.)
3. Tape the removed self-locking bolt to this sheet and return to CFE Engineering.

NOTE: Use a fiber or plastic drift to hold the tower shaft in the engaged position
in the bevel gear of the accessory drive bearing housing and bevel gear
assembly while installing the self-locking bolt. If the tower shaft disen-
gages from the bevel gear during installation of the self-locking bolt,
re-install the tower shaft in the same position marked with match-marks.
(1) Install the tower shaft Self-Locking Bolt, Part No. 3050178-3, in the accessory drive
bearing housing assembly and bevel gear assembly. Refer to 72-30-01, Installation, in
the Light Maintenance Manual.
(2) Remove the match-marks from the tower shaft and the bevel gear. Use isopropyl
alcohol (Federal Specification TT-I-735).
(3) Install the A sump assembly installation on the engine. Refer to 72-70-10, Installation,
in the Light Maintenance Manual.
(4) Install the fan speed N1 (NF) monopole. Refer to 77-10-01, Installation, in the Light
Maintenance Manual.
(5) Install the fan rotor assembly. Refer to 72-70-02, Installation, in the Light Maintenance
Manual.
(6) Remove the match-marks from the fan rotor assembly, the fan shaft nut, and the low
pressure turbine shaft. Use isopropyl alcohol (Federal Specification TT-I-735).
(7) Install the fan spinner. Refer to 72-70-01, Installation, in the Light Maintenance
Manual.
(8) Remove the Index marks from the fan spinner with isopropyl alcohol (Federal Specifi-
cation TT-I-735).
(9) Install the aircraft components that were removed to access the fan rotor assembly and
the N1 (NF) monopole (engine installed on aircraft). Refer to the Aircraft Maintenance
Manual.
(10) Check and ensure proper engine operation in accordance with Aircraft Flight Manual
and/or appropriate aircraft documents.
(11) Make entry in engine log book noting date of compliance, engine operating time (and
serial number of installed component if applicable) and compliance with this service
bulletin (and service bulletin revision number if applicable).
(13) Complete Compliance Certificate form and mail. Contact local CFE company
authorized service center to obtain forms, if required.
