INTRODUCTION

The Globe Live 3 bicycle (Standard and Mixte) is equipped with a Gates Carbon Drive™ Belt. This product requires particular care for proper
installation. This instruction guide contains instructions and warnings to be used in conjunction with the owner’s manuals and instruction guides
supplied with your bicycle.

Please read the following instructions. If you have any doubt regarding your mechanical ability and/or installation of this product, visit
your local authorized dealer. Specialized recommends that the belt be installed using a torque wrench, by a qualified mechanic.

Please read the following warnings. Failure to follow the warnings in this instruction guide may result in a catastrophic failure of belt,
resulting in serious personal injury or death. This phrase may not be repeated in connection with each and every warning.
The belt comes pre-installed on your bicycle. However, in some situations it may be necessary to remove, replace and/or install the belt.
This guide covers installation, removal and tensioning steps for the belt that are specific to your Globe bicycle. Please refer to Gates instruction
guides for belt handling, belt alignment & tensioning and rear sprocket removal instructions.

BELT HANDLING

Gates belts are extremely durable and offer long life when properly handled. However, caution must be used before and during installation to avoid
damaging the carbon tensile cords that make up the backbone of the belt’s strength. Excessive bending and twisting creates crimps which can lead to
belt breakage under high load. Keep the following precautions in mind when handling the belt.

To uncoil a new belt:
1. Grab the belt OUTSIDE coil with BOTH hands (Fig. 1).
2. Slowly walk your hands apart until the belt naturally flips open (Fig. 2, 3, 4).
3. The belt has been properly uncoiled (Fig. 5).

BELT INSTALLATION / REMOVAL

The Globe Live 3 (Standard and Mixte) has a special dropout that allows installation and removal of the belt. The seatstay and chainstay can
be disengaged, providing enough space to insert or remove the belt. It is important to ensure that the seatstay/chainstay junction bolt is properly
tightened, and that the belt is properly installed, aligned and tensioned before riding your bicycle.

The eccentric bottom bracket does not need to be loosened and adjusted unless the belt tension needs to be adjusted. If the belt or
rear sprocket need to be removed, simply removing the rear wheel will release the tension in the belt for removal.

To install or remove the belt through the dropout:

1. Unscrew the drive-side dropout/seatstay fixing bolt (Fig. 6).
2. Pull the dropout and the seatstay apart (Fig. 7).
3. Drop the belt through the opening between the dropout and the seatstay (Fig. 8).
4. Re-install the bolt (Fig. 9) and tighten to the recommended torque of 70 in-lbf (7.9 N*m).

TENSION REQUIREMENTS

Proper belt tension is critical to maintain optimum drive operation:

„„ Too low of tension will allow your belt to jump teeth. This is known as “ratcheting.” Ratcheting the belt will result in a popping sound, which
may lead to damage of the carbon tensile cords inside the belt. Damage to these cords will reduce the life of the belt, and may lead to failure.
Proper tensioning of the belt will usually eliminate ratcheting.
„„ Too high of tension can cause damage to drivetrain bearings. It can also increase wear on the belt and sprockets. Too high of a tension could
be felt as a dragging feeling while pedaling. Again, proper tensioning of the belt can eliminate these problems.

CHECKING TENSION

Proper tension can easily be set using the tension tester tool. This tool has two red zones with a green zone in the middle. Proper tensioning is
achieved when the measurement arm registers in the green zone. Tension within the green zone can vary somewhat. Depending on the size and
strength of the rider, tension can be varied while staying within the green zone, until proper tension is found.
If proper tension is needed, but the tension tester tool is unavailable, the force deflection method can be applied. The force deflection method
is simply deflecting the belt a prescribed amount with a given amount of force. Proper tensioning is achieved by deflecting the belt 1/2” with
approximately 5-10 lbs. of force (Fig. 13). With any tensioning procedure, it is recommended to rotate the crank/pedals and recheck tension several
times. This is because tension will vary within the belt due to part tolerances.

BELT ALIGNMENT / TENSIONING PROCEDURE

The Globe Live 3 (Standard and Mixte) uses a Shimano Alfine hub. The use of spacers is not required to properly align the front and rear sprockets
to the same parallel plane. Proper installation and tensioning of the belt will ensure that it is properly aligned with the front and rear sprockets. The
procedure below can also be used when installing a new belt.
To align and tension the belt:
1. Install the belt into the dropout. (See the BELT INSTALLATION/REMOVAL section on page 2.)
2. Slip the belt onto the rear sprocket.
3. Slip the belt onto the front sprocket.
4. Place the rear wheel into the rear dropouts.
5. Tighten the hub bolts. Recommended torque is 200 in-lbf (22.6 N*m).

WARNING! Do not pry the belt onto the sprocket (Fig. 10) or “roll” the belt on by rotating the cranks (Fig. 11). Doing so could damage
the belt and lead to failure. The belt should be installed loosely and then tensioned by installing the rear wheel into the dropouts.

PRY ROLL ON

NOTE: The following steps are only if the belt requires tension adjustment. If the belt is removed, installation of the same or new belt should not
require any re-tensioning of the eccentric bottom bracket.
6. Loosen the eccentric cam bottom bracket bolts (item A in Fig. 12), and turn the shell counter-clockwise from the drive-side (item B in Fig. 12).
7. Using a 6mm hex key (placed in the Allen hole on the non-drive-side of the eccentric BB shell), turn the eccentric cam bottom bracket (A) clockwise
to achieve proper belt tension (Fig. 13).
8. Tighten the two eccentric cam bottom bracket bolts to the recommended torque of 80 in-lbf (9.0 N*m) (Fig. 14).
9. Check the belt tension (as explained in the “TENSION REQUIREMENTS” and “CHECKING TENSION” sections) and, if necessary, repeat steps
1-3 and reposition the eccentric bottom bracket until proper tension is achieved.

5-10lb (2.75 - 4.5kg) force = 1/2” (12.5mm) deflection

10. Once proper tension has been achieved, back pedal and front pedal 10-15 times and check the alignment of the belt on the rear sprocket. The edge of
the belt should slightly touch or come just short (within 1mm) of touching the outside flange of the front sprocket (Fig. 15) and the inside flange of the
rear sprocket (Fig. 16).
11. Make final adjustments if needed.

NOTE: For additional information on installing the eccentric bottom bracket, please refer to the Specialized Eccentric Bottom Bracket
Installation Guide (IG0297).

SPROCKET REMOVAL / INSTALLATION

To remove the sprocket:

1. Remove the rear wheel from the dropouts.
2. Wrap the strap from the strap wrench (Fig. 17) around the sprocket (make sure the teeth of the strap wrench are on the loaded side of the strap).
3. Insert the cassette remover or freewheel tool (Fig. 18).
4. Get a firm grip on both the strap and the crescent wrench, then loosen the sprocket retainer.
5. Follow the hub manufacturer’s recommendations for re-installing the sprocket.
