THE POWER OF
OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Growing up, I frequently heard people referred to as
“born leaders.” I generally accepted that until I discovered
nOls. At nOls, we believe leadership is not a trait one is
born with, but a skill that can be learned, and we develop
positive, ethical leaders on our courses so they can go out

real and immediate feedback on decisions like packing your rain jacket in the bot-
tom of your pack or failing to communicate about a route with your team. nOls
students learn technical and leadership skills alike because they are essential to
success in the backcountry. Graduates carry those skills with them for the rest of
their lives because they are effective and ingrained through repetition and powerful
learning experiences.
Outdoor education teaches students how to thrive in varied and challeng-
ing environments around the world, and we know these skills are transferable to
all environments including the boardroom and classroom. The University of Utah
researched the benefits of wilderness education on nOls graduates and found that,
beyond outdoor and survival skills, graduates gained critical life skills including
effective handling of difficult circumstances, teamwork, leadership, strategic plan-
ning, and effective and inclusive communication.
A number of renowned U.s. business schools, including northwestern
University’s Kellogg Business school, the University of Pennsylvania’s wharton
Business school, and the yale University school of Management, have turned
to nOls to help students tap into the potential each of us has for strong leader-
ship. Over the course of a nOls expedition, students graduate from followers
to increasing levels of leadership. By placing more responsibility on students,
instructors develop leadership largely organically, cemented by daily reflection,
analysis, and classes. By the end of a course, nOls students are in charge of
everything from setting routes to managing group dynamics.
nOls alumni are competent wilderness travelers and leaders, prepared to
take novices into the backcountry or lead a team into a corporate merger. Equipped
with strong leadership skills learned in the great outdoors, our graduates continu-
ally amaze (but don’t surprise) me with all they accomplish in making the world a
better place.
