Ferguson, ALC Director. She
said in that way nobody has
to make a special trip any-
where else, or come during
their off hours.
Ferguson and the ALC staff
met with officials at United
Wireless and the casino to
assess their needs and the
needs of employees. Lisa
Killion, event manager at
United Wireless, said many
of her employees are part-
time, some working only
once or twice a month.
“We struggle with retention
and finding employees with
adequate customer service
skills. That’s what is interest-
ing about this grant. It helps
us meet the challenge of
keeping valuable employ-
ees,” Killion said.

motions. “These employers
spend thousands of dollars
to train an employee,” Fergu-
son said. “We have created
a customized, contextualized
curriculum for these employ-
ers’ needs. Everything we
are doing has been based
on what our employers have
requested,” Ferguson said.
Classes begin in Septem-
ber. Students will spend a
minimum of 40 hours in the
classes over several weeks.

started the 2019 Asphalt
Street Projects that will
cover 24 City blocks, utilizing
varying maintenance meth-
ods. In total, the projects
will resurface approximately
34,000 square yards of
asphalt streets and lay over
4,400 tons of asphalt, ac-
cording to an official report.
This work has been assigned
to the APAC Kansas con-
struction company and have
a half a million dollars cost,
said the City of Dodge City
Public Relations office.
Work will move fast on
these projects, and all areas
are expected to be com-
pleted within approximately
three weeks, depending
on the weather. During the
constructions process, APAC
will be requesting assistance
from residents in their work
zones to clear all vehicles
from the streets by sending
out letters before construc-
tion starts on each street.

that he believes the Kansas
Department for Children
and Families is retaliating
against his company for
refusing to agree to changes
after signing a grant exten-
sion in late June.
Hysell said the claims
are false and accused the
department of abusing its
authority. He said the de-
partment wanted changes in
how funds are distributed to
schools.

Lonely
Las raíces de la violencia
y muerte producida por las
constantes balaceras en
masa son diversas, comple-
jas y profundas. No soy
un experto en problemas
sociales o sicológicos, pero
como dice el refrán popular:
“Lo que está a la vista no
necesita de anteojos.”
Solo quiero enfocarme
en una de las causas: La
soledad en que esta mod-
erna sociedad se ha hun-
dido con el advenimiento de
la tecnología. Las nuevas
generaciones han perdido la
costumbre saludable de la
socialización personal con-
stante, una costumbre que
practicaban y disfrutaban las
generaciones pasadas.
La generación de hoy en
día “socializa” mas con
videos juegos, la internet y
las redes sociales. La gente
de hoy vive más inmersa
en un mundo virtual, un
mundo vacío; incluso en las
escuelas los estudiantes se
han divorciado mas y mas
del tradicional contacto
diario con sus maestros (as),
porque ahora las clases y
las tareas generalmente se
hacen en la computadora.
No hace mucho tiempo
nos referíamos a la gente
ya mayor como los solitarios
de nuestra sociedad. Pero
ahora, también las nuevas
generaciones se han unido
a ese club de solitarios. La
diferencia es que la gente
mayor vive un mundo de
soledad pasiva, mientras los
jóvenes de ahora viven en
un mundo de soledad activa.
La gente joven, por des-
gracia, tienen sus mentes
más ocupadas en cosas
insignificantes e improducti-
vas. Además, muchos niños
y adolescentes ya casi no
tienen el tradicional modelo
ejemplar en sus hogares que
imprimía y cultivaba amor y
respeto entre las generacio-
nes pasadas.

The roots of the violence
and death produced by
mass shooting frequency are
diverse, deep and complex.
I am not a pundit on social
or psychological issues, but
as the popular saying states:
“What is at the eyesight
does not need glasses.”
I want to focus just on one
cause: The loneliness this
modern society has fallen in,
with the advent of modern
technology. The new genera-
tions have lost the healthy
personal socialization habit
that previous generations
used to practice and enjoy.
Today’s generations are
“socializing” more with video
games, the internet and
the social media. Today’s
people live mostly in a virtual
world, an empty world; even
at schools students have
become divorced more
and more from the tradi-
tional daily contact with their
teachers, since now class
and assignments are mostly
made on the computer.
Until recently, we referred
to old people as the only soli-
tary ones of our society. Now
the new generations have
also joined this club of the
lonely. The difference is that
old people live in a passive
solitary world, while young
people live in an active soli-
tary world.
Young people have their
minds busy with trivial un-
meaningful things, wasting
the majority of their time in
unproductive things. Fur-
thermore, many youth have
not the traditional home-role
model that instilled and
cultivated love and appre-
ciation among past genera-
tions. The internet and social
media have replaced the
parents’ educational role.
Sociologist and psycholo-
gists agree that the current
violence has three sources
that feed it: Disaffected indi-
viduals who feel powerless,
radical ideas that blame par-
ticular groups and the use of
social media platforms.
These threads are nur-
tured by the solitude individ-
uals experience when they
waste excessive time inter-
acting virtually in a fantasy
world. Social media plays an
important role in the process
of incubation of bad ideas
and violence in the mind,
especially among lone actors
like the recent mass shoot-
ers.
A study by the National
Consortium for the Study of
Terrorism and Responses
to Terrorism indicates that
in 2016 the social media
played a role in radicalizing
and mobilizing 90 percent of

received permission to
conduct the first ever Be-
yond Visual Line of Sight
(BVLOS) drone operation in
the nation leveraging only
onboard detect-and-avoid
systems. This is the first-ever
FAA authorized operation to

Mushroom Growers

American Mushroom
Institute has reported that
U.S. mushroom growers are
facing rising costs.
The combination of issues
contributing to the rising
prices includes climate
volatility, continued labor
issues, changes in consumer
preferences and transporta-
tion expenses. This culmina-
tion causing price increases
could not occur at a worse
time of the year as the
mushroom industry is now
preparing for its busy fall
holiday season, when mush-
room demand increases by
30-40 percent.
“Growers have worked to
absorb the additional costs,”
said AMI President Rachel
Roberts. “The landscape has
shifted, and growers are cur-
rently experiencing a perfect
storm of multiple factors
that are causing increased
production costs.”
Roberts said that recent
climate volatility and ex-
treme rainfall events have
presented a challenge for
mushroom growers. Last
summer and fall there was
record-setting rainfall in the
east. The materials harvest-
ed, which are used as the
growing medium for mush-

mandatory minimum wage
increases,” noted Roberts.
“California will soon increase
its minimum wage by 9
percent. In a business where
labor costs top 50 percent,
a 9 percent increase will,
for example, cost California
mushroom growers an ad-
ditional 4.5 percent in labor
costs.”

Beisbol de Grandes Ligas,
tres equipos, los Tigres de
Detroit, Los Royals de Kan-
sas City y los Orioles de Bal-
timore, han tenido un pobre
desempeño en esta tem-
porada, y uno de ellos, Los
Tigres, prácticamente está
en la lona como aquellos
boxeadores que después de
recibir un golpe contundente
ya no puede levantarse.
Ese equipo es Los Tigres
de Detroit con apenas 38
juegos ganados y 86 juegos
perdidos. Dice la revista
Deportes Ilustrado que Los
Tigres no son simplemente
el peor equipo de las Ligas
Mayores, sino también son
candidatos a ser el peor
equipo en la reciente histo-
ria del beisbol. “Su ofensiva
es lo peor desde 1965, y
prácticamente no tienen
ninguna esperanza de salir
del hoyo donde han caído, al
menos en esta temporada.”
Por otro lado, los jugosos

sales which had previously
been restricted to suites and

stadium will debut selling
beer and wine in general
seating areas.
What is prompting college
to embrace wider alcohol
sales during games is the
growing sight of empty seats
on Saturdays. Average atten-
dance for Division I Foot-
ball Bowl Sub-conference
schools has fallen for five
consecutive years, according
to the NCAA. It is down 11
percent from a decade ago.
“Selling alcohol is relatively
simple and actually makes
money,” said Louisiana State
University senior associate
Athletics’ Director, Robert
Munson. He said the biggest
thing that makes a differ-
ence in attendance is that
“have to be there” moment,
and the feeling that watch-
ing on TV or on your phone
is not going to capture the
moment like being there in
person.
Munson said fans have
made clear for some time
that they wanted to be
able to buy alcohol in gen-
eral seating areas. Bjork, at
