INSTRUCTION. Use CE paper. Write down the statement of the problem, given, required, and
solution. Don’t forget to box your final answer. Use black ink and pencil for any drawing or
diagram. This will be submitted on the schedule of your Final Exam together with the
compilation of your activities.

Moment of Inertia
1. Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area about y-axis. Ans. 𝟏. 𝟓𝟔𝟖𝟕 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟕 𝒎𝟒

2. Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area with respect to x-axis. Ans. 𝟏. 𝟖𝟓 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟒 𝒎𝟒
3. Determine the centroidal moments of inertia about x and y – axis. Ans. 𝑰𝒙′ = 𝟒. 𝟔𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟔 𝒎𝟒 ,
𝑰𝒚′ = 𝟕. 𝟑𝟖 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟒 𝒎𝟒

Friction Force

4. Determine the block shown is in equilibrium, and find the magnitude and direction of the friction
force when Ө = 30° and P = 200 N. Ans. 𝑩𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒔; 𝑭 = 𝟏𝟗𝟑. 𝟐 𝑵 𝒖𝒑𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅
5. Knowing that the coefficient of friction between 27 kg block and the incline is μs = 0.25,
determine (a) the value of P for which motion of the block up the incline id impending (b) the
corresponding value of β. Ans. 𝒂. 𝟒𝟏. 𝟕 𝒍𝒃. , 𝒃. 𝟏𝟒. 𝟎𝟒°

Cables
6. The cable AE supports three vertical loads from the points indicated. If point C is 1.5 m below
the left support, determine (a) the elevation of points B and D, (b) the maximum slope and the
maximum tension in the cable. Ans. a) 𝒀𝒃 = 𝟏. 𝟔𝟕 𝒎, 𝒀𝒅 = 𝟏. 𝟕𝟓 𝒎, 𝒃. 𝑻𝒎𝒂𝒙 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟔 𝒌𝑵
7. A light cable is attached to a support at A, passes over a small pulley at B, and supports a load P.
Knowing that the sag of the cable is 0.5 m and that the mass per unit length of the cable is 0.75 kg/m,
determine (a) the magnitude of the load P, (b) the slope of the cable at B, c) the total length of the cable
from A to B. Since the ratio of the sag to the sag to the span is small, assume the cable to be parabolic.
Also, neglect the weight of the portion of cable from B to D. Ans. a) 𝑷 = 𝑻𝒃 = 𝟐𝟗𝟖𝟒 𝑵 𝒃. Ө = 2.9° c.
length = 40.0167 m
