Problems Programming Some Mechatronic Units
It has come to our attention that when fitting new mechatronic units customers are experiencing difficulties programming
them to the vehicle, especially those in the 0B5 (DL501) transmission. This program download should be carried out by a
VW/Audi main dealer using the VAS system, although it can be carried out independently using the OEM VAS system or
an equivalent alternative, it has however been brought to our notice that in some cases main dealers are also experiencing
problems programming these units due to the issue detailed below.

We have had customers with issues regarding the programming of the replacement mechatronic where the automatic
down load has stopped because it has found a fault with the Range position sensor (G676), this is in fact not a fault with
the sensor but a mismatch between the position of the gear selector lever and the position the new mechatronic thinks the
switch is in.

Replacing the G676 with a new sensor will fix the issue due to the new sensor also needing to be programmed to the car,
however there is no need to change this switch if there were no range sensor related issues with the original mechatronic.

The problem can be overcome by carrying out the programming in manual mode and then when the position sensor fault
comes up it doesn’t stop the upload but the position of the lever can then be manually programmed. Please note also, that
the transmission oil temperature seems to be critical during this process.

Do you need to replace the mechatronic unit?

In many cases it is not necessary to replace the mechatronic unit with all the associated programming problems, many of
the faults experienced with these units can often be fixed without the need for replacement. Because the PWM solenoids
work very hard in these units they are prone to wear, this in turn causes a number of issues with engagement and shift
quality, it is also highly recommended that the valve body loom is replaced with the modified version, also that the pressure
line tubes and valve body to pump tube set are replaced at the time of rebuild.

The solenoids and electrical components on these unit are not overly difficult to replace and are likely to cure the faults
without the expense and frustration fitting and programming a new mechatronic.

Pressure Control Solenoids for
02E (DQ250) DSG Transmissions
Just a reminder that Automatic Choice are able to supply the PWM control
solenoids for the above transmission, the PWM solenoids are the most common
failure in this unit as the remaining solenoids are of the on/off type and rarely
breakdown. Some of the problems that can be caused by worn solenoids are:
• Hard engagement of 1st gear when stationary.
• Hard downshifting from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1st gear followed by “clunking” noises.
• Shaking / juddering feeling while in 2nd gear and the car comes to a stop.
• Jerking between gears.
