Mechanics of Solids: Strain Analysis

This document contains mechanics of solids practice problems involving determining strain components and principal strains from strain gauge readings under different conditions. It includes problems finding principal strains from a state of plane strain with given strain components, from strain rosette readings, and from a 600 strain rosette. It also provides equations to determine strain components in polar and cylindrical coordinates.

Assignment for Practice

(Not for Submission)

4.1 In a state of plane strain in the x-y plane, the strain components associated with x-y
axes are
εxx = 900×10-6, εyy = 100×10-6, γxy = -800×10-6
Find the principal strains and the orientation of the principal strain directions.

4.2 The readings of a 450 strain-rosette are

εa = 100×10-6, εb = 200×10-6, εc = 900×10-6
Find the magnitude of the principle strains.

4.3 A 600 strain-rosette recorded following normal strains:

ε00 = 500×10-6 , ε600 =800×10-6, ε1200 = -600×10-6
Determine the strains in x-y plane if ε00 coincides with εxx . Also determine the
principal strains.

4.4 Show that for plane strain, the various strain components in polar coordinates (r, θ)
are
∂u 1 ∂v u ∂v 1 ∂u v
εrr = ; εθθ = + ; γrθ = + −
∂r r ∂θ r ∂r r ∂θ r

4.6 Using the results of 4.4, show that if a general three dimensional deformation is to be
described in cylindrical co-ordinates (r, θ, z) in which the displacement components
are u, v and w, respectively, the strain components (other than those given in 4.4) are
∂w ∂u ∂w 1 ∂w ∂v
εzz = ; γrz = + ; γθz = +
∂z ∂z ∂r r ∂θ ∂z
