Purpose
This procedure is to assist Gekko customers to assemble and fit bearing housing and wheels.

Safety Considerations
Wear appropriate PPE to complete task.
Complete JSA as appropriate and follow safe operating procedures.

Equipment Required

• C-spanner (and alternatively Gekko socket tool (DG09712) and rattle gun).
• Metric feeler gauges (0.020 – 0.040mm).
• Ball peen hammer.
• Punch.
• Imperial socket set.
• G-Cramp.
• M6 Alan key.
• Grease gun.

Consumables
• Grease.
• Silastic.
• Duct tape.
• Scrap flat bar steel (for spacer blocks).

Hardware
• See appendices.
• S/S M6x20 set screws.

Procedure.

1. Layout all housing, seal, bearing, ring spacer, taperlock, nut and washer. Ensure all parts
present and all tools are available, before commencing task.

2. Dismantle bearing housing(s) and visually check for any foreign material inside the
housing. Remove any foreign material eg. Kerosene bath, as appropriate to site
procedures.

3. Assemble bearing and taperlock. Lightly grease inside housing and taperlock. The
taperlock will slide easily through the bearing to the point where about 15mm of thread is
exposed if it is the right way around. Place the locking washer with the tabs pointing away
from the bearing. Screw on the nut with the tapered side toward the bearing and leave
about halfway on. (use caustic resistant grease)

4. Fit the seal to the bearing.

Fit the seal with the open side out.

This is to allow excess grease to escape.

The seal can be pressed about halfway in with the thumbs, ensuring it goes in square. Use
the brass drift to tap it in the whole way.

5. Fit the bearing into the housing.

Bearing and housing grease holes must line up.

Push the bearing in by hand to get it started, ensuring it is square, then use a drift on the
outer race, gently tap it home to the recess face near the seal.

6. Clean the roller shafts and slide the bearing assemblies onto the shaft with the seal side
towards the roller.
7. Place in the spacer ring after the bearing.

8. (NOTE: ON AN ILR100 & ILR150 ONLY. ONE BEARING/ HOUSING ASSEMBLY ON

ONE SIDE OF THE WHEEL HAS A SPACER AND THE OTHER BEARING/ HOUSING
ASSEMBLY DOES NOT- IT FLOATS)

9. Cover bearing housing grease holes with tape to stop foreign material entering bearing
housing.

10. Place bearings onto bearing mount and then onto pedestal block. (ILR1000 series
shown).

Apply anti-seize compound to all threads.

11. To ensure the roller is central to the pedestal block, make suitable spacer blocks out of
flat bar steel and fit between the roller and the pedestal block.

On an ILR100 and ILR150, the same procedure can be used to make sure
that the roller is in the centre of the bearing housings. (no spacer block
required)

12. Fit the lock washer, and lock nut. Slowly commence tightening the lock nut.

The block will stop side movement.

The roller may tend to rotate when commencing tightening move
when locking up. Clamp up roller if it turns during this procedure..

13. Align the bearing mounts on the so that the long axis of the wheel is parallel to the front
face of the pedestal block.

14. Tighten up the locknut using the rattle gun and socket tool DG09712 as shown.

The spacer block that is positioned between the roller and the pedestal block is not
visible in this photo.

15. Using a 0.035mm feeler gauge, check the clearance between the roller and outer race at
the top of the bearing. The gauge should comfortably pass through the roller and outer
race at the top of the bearing.

When performing the same check as described above, a 0.050mm

feeler should be tight.

16. Repeat the previous two steps until the clearance of 0.020 – 0.040mm is achieved.

Ensure that the shaft rotates easily at the completion of the

adjustment.

17. Bend over a tab on the lock washer so that it folds into the lock nut recess.

18. Fill bearing end cap with grease while turning the wheel.

19. Repeat the bearing tightening steps for the adjacent bearing housing.

Ensure that the wheel rotates easily at the completion of both

bearing adjustments.
If necessary, repeat adjustment until the wheel rotates easily.

20. Install the bearing housing end cap to bearing housing. Use silastic on the faces to
create a water tight seal.

21. Remove tape covering the grease holes on the bearing housing. Install elbows and fit
grease lines.

When using pneumatic grease gun, the potential exists to blow

bearing seals if grease lines aren’t primed.

22. Using the remote grease line, pump grease until it can be seen squeezing out between
the wheel shaft and the seal.

Rotate the wheel while applying grease.

23. Evenly adjust the bearing mounts inward so that the wheel makes contact with the ILR
drum tyre and takes some of the weight of the drum.

24. Install the wheel face greaser bracket and apply enough grease so that the inner face of
the wheel and sides are lubricated.

ILR1000 ILR100 and ILR150 series.

25. Re-fit guards etc as appropriate before removing isolation.

26. Rotate the ILR drum.

27. Via the remote grease line, apply sufficient grease so that the face and inner sides of the
wheel is lubricated.

Check that the wheel is in contact with the drum tyre after a period of
operation.
Adjust the bearing mounts as appropriate, to ensure that the wheel
and tyre are in contact and recheck after a period of operation.
