W. F. Harvey - Macarbre master
Burried in Letchworth. William Fryer Harvey (1885 - 1937) was an English short story writer who left his mark Business Directory Pg 32 in the horror and mystery genres. Event Listing Pg 34 He hailed from a wealthy Quaker family, studied medicine at Oxford and was a doctor by training. In World War I he initially joined the Friends’ Ambulance Unit, Front cover provided by Tony but later served as a surgeon-lieutenant in the Royal Navy, and Prezio, taken at Wrest Park, Silsoe. received the Albert Medal for Lifesaving. Lung damage received during the rescue, leading to the award, troubled him for the rest of his life but he continued to write both short stories and his cheerful and good-natured memoir ‘We Were Seven’. He devoted himself to writing macabre tales of Gothic fiction. His first book of short stories was ‘Midnight House’ (1910). He moved to Letchworth in 1935 and died there in 1937 at the age FOLLOW US: of 52. After a funeral service at the local Friends Meeting House Harvey was buried in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin in Old Letchworth. Harvey’s grave resides in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Letchworth www.amberpublications.co.uk Harvey is best remembered for two of his best stories, considered "minor masterpieces": ‘August Heat’ (1910) and ‘The Beast with Five Fingers’ (1919) which was made into a film in 1946 directed by Robert Florey and starring Peter Lorre.
