Immigration

Every day, a huge number of airplanes cars and ships cross America’s borders
bringing people from other lands. Almost 430 million passengers arrived in 2004. This has
been the case for centuries. People end up staying, trying to get a better life. America offers
to people more opportunities than other countries and less discrimination.

America has received a wave of immigration since 19th century. Many of them
arrived from Europe and Asia in search of a better life. Immigrants from Mexico and Asia
tended to settle in the west and southwest. Between 1892 and 1924 Ellis Island in New
York was the point of entry of 17 million immigrants.

The Tenement Museum shows how harsh their living condition used to be back in
the years. They used to live in apartments with only three rooms with a common kitchen.
people used to share with more than ten people. Meanwhile, in the west coast, people
passed through a point called Angel Island. People specially from Asia had to contend with
strict immigration laws.

Now days, The United States continues open to new settlers from all around the
world. The challenge to the nation it’s about legal and illegal immigration. Despite the
challenge, America has clearly become stronger because of them. Immigrants have shown
that even if they left their main country, they have kept the way of drees, traditions and they
share similar values with the people already living there.
