Load Table
Column Terminology (To be read in conjunction with Loading Tables 1-4)
Reference
Nameplate Rating Motors The mechanical output expressed in kW available at the motor shaft after taking into
consideration power factor and efficiency
A
Lighting Power taken by lamp excluding gear losses, power factor and efficiency
Heating Power taken by heater, excluding associated control gear losses. i.e. thyristor banks
Power Factor Self explanatory. Varies with reactive load, rating and operating conditions. Normally 0.84 to 0.9 for
B
squirrel cage induction motors. Lighting and other loads to be individually assessed.
Motor Efficiency Mechanical output power expressed as a ratio of the electrical input power. Normally 0.9 for squirrel cage
C
motors.
D Connected Load Input power in kVA supplied to load.
Motor Loading Factor Anticipated power adsorbed expressed as a ratio of the motor rating. Difficult to assess before plant runs.
E However, most motors are sized 10-15% larger than mechanical power requirements.
Typical factors 0.85 to 0.9
Duty Factors
Assessment of running duty, such as: Duty Factor
Working / Standby Only 1 out of 2, or 2 out of 3 drives/load will run together. i.e. Standby drive acts 1 Working Continuous
as a true spare. 1 Infrequent
F Continuous Expected to run all the time. 0.3 Intermittent
Intermittent Run for short periods with long time intervals < 1 hour per day. 0 Standby
E.g. Valve Actuator
Infrequent Runs infrequently, but may absorb full power continuously. E.g. Frost protection
trace heating.
Estimated Running Motors The load in KVA supplied after taking into consideration Duty Factor and Motor
Load Loading Factor
G
Lighting The load taking into consideration gear losses and Power Factor to give steady
state circuit value

Multiplier
Spare Capacity Factor as per unit value to give optimum sparage for a particular design determined by
the engineer. Generally this factor is decided by the limits set by transformer or feeder supply capacity.
