50 jaar Planologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

50 jaar geleden, op 2 juli 1968, trad prof GJ van den Berg in dienst van de Rijksuniversiteit
Groningen en kreeg als leeropdracht ‘Planologie & Demografie’. Van den Berg z’n interesse
bleek vooral bij de planologie te liggen. Z’n opvolger prof Henk Voogd zette vervolgens in
op de Technische Planologie. Zie hier een ontwikkeling die 50 jaren later zal resulteren in
3 afzonderlijke opleidingen in de planologie.

Op dit moment studeren aan de in zwang, met o.m. Engelstalige opleidingen,

Rijksuniversiteit Groningen zo’n 300 tot
400 studenten planologie, in omvang de
grootste van Nederland. Was Van den Berg
nog twee formatieplaatsen toebedeeld,
inmiddels telt de Basiseenheid Planologie
27 personen met een formele aanstelling.
Daarnaast zijn er nog emeritaten, docent
honorairs, externe docenten, aio’s en beursalen.
Van den Berg begon met lokale studies naar
burgerparticipatie (en was daarmee z’n tijd
vooruit). Tegenwoordig is internationalisering

en innovatief onderzoek dat internationaal Planologie leeft,

50 years of Spatial Planning at the University of Groningen

50 years ago, on the 2nd of July 1968, Prof GJ van den Berg was appointed at the University
of Groningen to lecture ‘Planologie & Demografie’. Van den Berg made it quite clear that
his immediate interest was spatial planning. His successor Prof Henk Voogd appreciated a
specifically ‘technical’ attitude to planning. It was this development that has resulted in
three separate programmes in spatial planning.

Currently, there are about 300-400 students
in spatial planning – it is the largest number of
students for this discipline in the Netherlands.
At the start, Prof van den Berg had a team of only
two to support his spatial planning ambitions.
A lot has changed since then and nowadays
there are 27 colleagues with a formal position
at the Department of Spatial Planning &
Environment. Aside from the regular staff
there are emeriti, honorary lecturers, external
lecturers, PhD researchers and students. Van
den Berg favoured local studies on citizen
involvement and in this sense he was ahead
of his time. Today internationalisation is
the buzzword with English programmes, a
