TURN on TIME

Delay time:
time between the instant
at which the gate current
reaches 90% of its final
value & the instant ate
which the anode current
reaches 10% of its final
value
Time delay
can also be defined as
the time during which
anode voltage falls from
Va to 0.9 Va
Rise time
Time required for the
anode current to rise
from 10 to 90% of its
final value
• Rise time can also be
defined as the time
required for the forward
blocking OFF- state
voltage to fall from 0.9
Va to 0.1 Va
• This time is inversely
proportional to the
magnitude of the gate
current & its build up
time
• For RL series circuit the
rate of change of current
is low
• For RC series circuit it
is high. Hence rise time
is less in this
• Spread time , Ts
• Time required for the
forward blocking
voltage to fall from 0.1
Va to its value of the
ON state voltage drop (1
to 1.5 v)
• After this, current
reaches steady state
value and the voltage
drop across SCR is
about 1 to 1.5 V
• Due to large forward
current and an
appreciable forward
voltage carried by SCR
during its rise time ,
high instantaneous
power dissipation
occurs. This may
destroy the device.
• Hence rate of rise of
current should be
limited.
