THE PRESSPECTIVE

Our elders smiled at this unpleasant scene
Every morning I wonder why

There are guns stored under our mattress

And my son is attracted to this madness,
A false dissection.
Determined to shoot people instead of a freethrow
A false projection of a false god.
And chase after evil instead of learning how to tie a bow
A false salute and nod.
I wonder why.

But if you speak out for yourself,
The murdering of millions and that’s fine
They’re ready to slice off your head.
So primitive are these creatures without spines
Running from disaster, can’t get away
A fight without reason, the forsaken word of treason
Living in fear my daughter will get raped today
The end is coming it is just a matter of time
I wonder why.
But we don’t have a voice
They pillage and they plunder
Every night I wonder if I doomed my children
As our children cower in the face of thunder
By bringing them into this World
I wonder why.
But then I remember

The Happiest Man on the Planet

desiccated lungs let out a piercing cry which succumbed into nothing,
halfway through. The happiest man on the planet, at this point, wanted nothing more than
his own death.
He lay upon the ground; a land where plants and flowers burned into
ashes that reminded him of his son’s corpse, that lay in the distance.
Incinerated and deformed, it lay under particles of transparent crystalline
icicles. Yet again, he was in pain at the realisation of it all.

In times past, this man was once a celebrated entity, world leader, the
maker of decisions.
“A nuclear war!” he exclaimed, “to conquer every state, to attain all
powers and to make me the happiest man on the planet!”

The leader, now surrounded by the skeletal remains of both the living and
non-living, the people and the structures they had built, institutions and
education, felt powerless. The only subjects he could rule over were now
the grotesque, deformed corpses, drenched under the waves of their
existences, that engulfed them.

The Japanese’s Impeccable Sense of Time

Anant Narayan of Xinhua writes a satire ‘The future is now; the past never was’
Japan has always been a forward-looking, futuristic nation, as is
evidenced by its continuous pursuit of economic development. As a
matter of fact, such is the commitment of the Japanese to the future, that
all memory of their past seems to have been wiped clean from their
minds. This seems ever so slightly convenient, considering the nature of
their imperialistic past. With strategic land acquisitions and wealth in their
pockets, they have deftly managed to advance their economy garnered
from the woefully mismanaged treasury of the Qing dynasty. Perhaps it is
better this way, for at least it has been utilized to enlarge the economic
potential of some nation, if regrettably not China, rather than to enlarge

the already bulging pockets of Qing court officials and royalty.

Japan has indeed signed treaties with China afterward, but never made a
direct apology for the violence. Dozens of treaties, pacts, deals and Joint
Communiques (and whatever other synonyms they can think up for
‘agreement’) may be signed, but without an apology to show that they at
least acknowledge the horrors of the past, they cannot expect us to be
satisfied. We want a glass of lemonade from Japan; they may drown us in
boatloads of water but without the lemon we cannot be content.

In summation, our newfound diplomatic friend Japan has a bad long-term

memory, and it is our duty as good friends to gently remind them of their
past, even if they aren’t particularly willing to recall it.
