GENESIS
Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata
Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur, an NGO, was
registered as a Society, under Rajasthan
Societies Registration Act 261/1974-75 on
March 29, 1975. This was to commemorate
2500th year of Nirvana of Bhagwan Mahaveer,
the apostle of Ahimsa and Lord of compassion.
BMVSS is a purely secular, non-
religious, non-governmental, non-political,
non-sectarian, non-regional institution, for
helping the physically challenged, particularly
the financially weak and under-privileged.
The idea of setting up the society arose
out of a trauma. Shri D. R. Mehta, Founder &
Chief Patron of BMVSS met with a serious Sudha Chandran, film actress

VISION
The main objective of BMVSS is
physical, economic and social rehabilitation of
the disabled, so that they regain their mobility
and dignity, thereby making them normal, self-
respecting and productive members of the
society.
MISSION
According to a sample survey
conducted by the Government of India, there
are about 10 million people suffering from
loco-motor disabilities, of which about one
million are those who lost their limbs and
another four million people suffer from polio.
Even though polio has been eliminated in
India now, the demand for calipers for old
polio cases continues. Further, loss of limbs is
also rampant as a result of accidents, landmine
and gunshot victims in war zones and strife-
torn areas, diseases (like diabetes burger's)
etc. The Mission of BMVSS is to provide
limbs, calipers and other aids and appliances
to as many of such disabled, as possible, at its
centers, and through its outreach programmes
and rehabilitation camps.
BMVSS is also programmed to provide
financial and other support for a select few for
the economic and social rehabilitation of the
disabled, particularly through low-cost quick-
maturing livelihood and employment schemes.
BMVSS is also committed to undertake
and promote Research & Development for
improving the existing artificial limbs, calipers
and other aids and appliances and developing
the new ones for to improve the quality and
reduce the cost of the devices.
VALUE SYSTEM
BMVSS tries to help all categories of
disabled. However, its focus is on the poor
disabled who remain deprived of limbs, aids
and appliances under the existing unaffordable
health care system.
The philosophy of BMVSS is to
consider the need of the disabled rather than his
capacity to pay.
In the above-mentioned backdrop, it is
the avowed policy of BMVSS to provide
artificial limbs, calipers and all other
rehabilitation aids and appliances (like
wheelchairs, hand-paddled tricycles, crutches,
etc) to all its beneficiaries TOTALLY FREE OF
COST.
The second value element of BMVSS is
to focus on the self-respect and dignity of the
disabled. Even while the assistance is provided
free by BMVSS, it is offered as help rather than
a dole or charity, which may belittle the dignity
of the poor disabled.
Another critical dimension of the value
system of BMVSS is the equality of treatment
for all its beneficiaries. Thus the assistance is
provided without any gender bias.
Besides, all its beneficiaries whether
Hindus (including scheduled caste and tribes),
Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains
etc are treated alike. Similarly, no distinction is
made on the ground of Geography.

COVERAGE
BMVSS is the world's largest
organization for the disabled. It has so far
benefited over 1.35 million disabled.
BMVSS started in a modest way by
providing 59 limbs in 1975. Since, then it has
been able to scale its operations significantly. It
has grown from strength to strength. In the last
decade, annually about 50,000 - 65,000
beneficiaries get various aids and appliances
from BMVSS.
BMVSS, as a humanitarian
organization, knows no frontiers. The disabled
all over the world are its concern.

BMVSS is a Pan-India organization
serving disabled from all parts of the country
from Kashmir to Kerala and Gujarat to Assam.
BMVSS has 23 branches - at Jaipur
(two), seven other branches in Rajasthan as
well as branches at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai,
Hyderabad, Bangaluru, Varanasi, Ahmedabad,
Patna, Gowhati, Indore, Srinagar, Ambala. The
details of the branches are at page 16.
In addition, BMVSS regularly holds
on-site field camps outside its centers at various
places in different parts of the country to help
patients who have financial and physical
difficulty in traveling to the centers. Doctors
and technicians travel with equipment and
materials, sometimes with a mobile van, to
these camps. They provide on-the-spot
fabrication, fitment and delivery of limbs and
other aids and appliances. In a year over 50 such
camps are held.
Besides, BMVSS is an international
organization. It has already held more than 50
on-the-spot artificial limb / caliper fitment
camp in 26 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin
America (details at last page). For these camps
also, technicians and equipment of BMVSS are
sent to the concerned countries. Temporary
workshops are setup where artificial limbs are
fabricated and fitted. Such camps are supported
by the local donors / governments etc.
In its international footprints of lasting
type, BMVSS has helped establish associate
centers and joint ventures in a few countries.

Tens of thousands of amputees in the developing world wear an
inexpensive prosthetic called the Jaipur Foot. But poor patients who
lose a knee joint have few options: a titanium replacement can cost $
10,000, and crude models don’t work very well. Now a team of
Stanford engineering students has designed a knee that’s not only
dirt cheap—just $20—but also mimics the natural joint’s movements.
Developed with the Jaipur Foot group, the Jaipur Knee is made of self-
lubricating, oil-fillled nylon and is both flexible and stable, even on
irregular terrain. The device is being tested in India; more than 300
people have been fitted so far.

(HDPE) Pipes was pioneered at BMVSS.
HDPE is light weight; has a high impact
resistance; and high tensile strength. It is an
inert material and is not affected by climate
change. The use of HDPE pipes results in
seamless and very strong sockets / shanks. The
skin colour of the HDPE pipes obviates the

need for additional cosmetic cover. Using
HDPE pipes, the fabrication time is cut short
drastically as compared to lamination or
thermoforming of sheets. This enables BMVSS
to cater to a very large number of amputees.
Depending on the amputee indications,

used at BMVSS.
The average normal life span of a Jaipur
Foot / artificial limb is between 3 to 4 years
depending on use.
RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT
The philosophy of BMVSS is that
sentiment must be fused with science. This
enables improvement in quality and reduction
in cost. Accordingly a special priority has been
accorded to R&D.
BMVSS has a high powered Technical
Committee to guide its Research &
Development. Its members include Professors
of IITs of Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai and
MNIT – Jaipur.. Besides, the Director General
of All India Institute of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation – Mumbai, Director – National
Institute of Designs - Ahmadabad. Further,
there are senior orthopaedic surgeons,
Rehabilitation experts, Metallurgists and
polymer experts etc.
BMVSS has also established
connectivity with some of the leading
technology institutions of the world. There is a
formal MOU between BMVSS and the
Stanford University. A very significant
outcome of this association is the development
of a new and functionally more efficient Jaipur-
Knee Joint (see technical section).
BMVSS has also an MOU with the
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO),
India's leading scientific institution. ISRO has
given a new design of polyurethane foot (PU
Foot) called the 'Mahavir – ISRO' Foot, being
made through computer controlled injection
moulding process. For this extensive field trials
are under way.

GAIT LAB
With the exceptionally generous
support of Paul Hamlyn Foundation – London,
a U.K. charity, on the November 27, 2012,
BMVSS set up Paul Hamlyn International
Center for Prosthetics & Orthotics, which is
focused on research and development in the
field of disability. It was inaugurated by Ms.
Jane Hamlyn, the chair person and also the
daughter of late Mr. Paul Hamlyn. It is located
in the Malviya Nagar, Jaipur Center of
BMVSS.
One of the features of this Paul Hamlyn
Center is the establishment of the state-of-art
and one of the most modern Gait Labs in India
and even in the world. This has been funded by
Indian Railways Catering and Tourism
Corporation Ltd., New Delhi.
This is in furtherance of the Research &
Development work. The Gait Lab is equipped
to study post prosthetic amputee Gait. Gait
analysis is the systematic study of locomotion
using the eye & brain of the observer
augmented by instrumentation for measuring
body movements & forces.
The Gait Lab consists of infrared
cameras placed around a walkway linked to a
data station. Fifteen markers are placed at
various anatomical points of reference on the
patient's body. The patient is made to walk

down the walkway which has floor mounted
load transducers, known as the Force plate. The
computer calculates the trajectory of each
marker in 3 dimensions. A complete breakdown
of the movement and forces about each joint is
calculated.
This is used to assess, plan and treat
individuals with conditions affecting their
ability to walk. The net forces and net moments
of forces are computed about each joint at every
stage of the gait cycle. The study thus quantifies
the measurable parameters of gait which are
compared to normative parameters to identify
gait deviations. The diagnosis of compensatory
mechanisms for gait disorders aids in
modifying the artificial limb to optimise
performance.
The objective of the gait analysis is to
feed back the results to improve the designs of
the assistive devices. The other feature of Paul
Hamlyn International Center for Prosthetics &
Orthotics is the establishment of a sophisticated
workshop, where the amputees with complex
problems are being provided with artificial
limbs.
Further, a training institute is also being
housed in this center to provide training in
Prosthetics & Orthotics to Indian and foreign
students.

D.R. Mehta, Founder & Chief Patron,
BMVSS, received country's third-highest
civilian award, the Padma Bhushan for his
outstanding contribution towards society and the
handicaps. This award was presented in the year
2008 by President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil.

the coveted Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana
Award for the year 2012 by Prime Minister Sh.

being the best institution for the handicapped
from the Government of India in the year 1982.
Again BMVSS received the national award for
the best institution working in the field of
rehabilitation of the disabled from the Ministry

Society (Jaipur Foot/Limb and Calipers)
supplements efforts in making disabled
persons functional by providing artificial
limbs, calipers, other aids and appliances,
economic assistance free of charge.
This enables them to regain their
self-respect and human dignity as also to
become normal and useful members of the
community. The Jaipur Limb is so efficient
that after this limb is fitted, a person can
walk like a normal person without a stick or
support, and even run, ride a bicycle and
climb a tree. Many of the patients can, after
the fitment, go back to work in the fields,
factories, shops and offices. Jaipur Foot has
also been fitted to landmine victims and
others in foreign countries like Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lebanon, Nigeria,
Nepal, Nairobi, Pakistan, Panama,
Philippines, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia, and
Zimbabwe.

or Paris but they are likely to know a town in
northern India called Jaipur. Jaipur is famous
in strife-torn area as the birth place of an extra
ordinary prosthesis or artificial limb,known as
Jaipur Foot,that has revolutionised life for
millions of landmine amputees. The beauty of
Jaipur Foot is its lightness and mobility-those
who wear it can run, climb trees and pedal
bicycles-and its low price"

Jaipur Foot is the world’s largest prosthesis
provider, with more than 16,000 prosthetic
fittings per year. The charity BMVSS serves
more than 60,000 by providing calipers,
appliances, and other aids. The functionality of
the Jaipur Foot measured against what is
available in the United States along more than
20 dimensions, is equal or better. However, the
Jaipur Foot costs less than $30 compared to
$8,000 for a comparable prosthesis in the
United States. In fact, the Jaipur Foot is given
free to all. Jaipur Foot is now in more than 16
countries where BOP patients exist, such as
Afghanistan, Angola, Somalia, Iraq,
Mozambique, Cambodia,Vietnam Lebanon,
Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Fiji and Vietnam.
BMVSS was established in March
1975 by Mr DR Mehta. In the first seven years
after the development of the Jaipur Foot in
1968, hardly 50 limbs were fitted. In the first
year after the formation of the society, 59 limbs
were fitted. Now the number of limbs fitted
every year approaches 16,000.During the time
from march 1975 (when BMVSS was

 established) to March 2003, BMVSS
successfully fitted 236,717 limbs in India and
14,070 around the world….If not for the value
system and patient-centric management
practices followed by BMVSS, Jaipur Foot
might have remained on the shelf in limbo.
BMVSS emphasizes, a holistic approach to
addressing the problems of amputees. The
society focuses on not only the medical
problems of the underprivileged, but also the
financial and social problems.
Jaipur Foot’s expenses breakdown for
the 2002 fiscal year underscores the efficiency
of expense and underpins the Society’s efforts
to serve a as many patients as possible given its
financial resources. Nearly 90 percent of the
company’s expense in the 2002 fiscal year was
directly related to the cost of producing and
fitting prosthesis for the poor. Another seven
percent of expenses went toward other forms of
charitable assistance. Only four percent of its
expenditure went towards administrative and
overhead expenses.
