INTRODUCTION

Every entrepreneur has a different story about why he or she decided to start
a business. Some have known from day one that they wanted to work for
themselves and others come up with ideas while working for someone else and
decide to take the entrepreneurial leap. Most business owners will agree on one
thing – being an entrepreneur is great. There are endless reasons for this, and
every entrepreneurial will have his or her own personal reasons as well.

We feature Ms. Evelyn Cabiling – Vitug because of her never-say-die attitude,

unconditional love to her family and community. Despite of the difficulties,
obstacles, challenges she had encountered in her business, it is truly fascinating
how successful she was today. Her confidence in the face of hardship, dedication
in the continuous expansion of business, and the continuous generation of jobs
for their town and other municipalities are the reasons why we chose her. The
expansion and several branches of her business show that she has self-discipline,
integrity, persistent, have a clear sense of direction, action-oriented and fearless.

With all the blessings she got from above, she still does not forget where
she came from. So that, she established WE CARE Drug because of her willingness
to help others.

Finding the motivation in running the business keeps it from becoming stale
in the long run. No matter which part you love most, loving them all is equally as
important. We are amazed with her because even she is a woman, she can grow
her business. She is a role model to her family, friends, employees and community
members. Because as an entrepreneur you have to stay focused no matter what
and silence the doubts with results.

God’s Dreams Are Better Than My Dreams

I’m a nurse by profession. I graduated sa UST (uhm…) sa college. And then,
nagwork muna ako as a nurse sa states. So… sumunod ako sa parents ko, sa

magiging (uhm...) gusto mong puntahan, yung ambisyon mo, or any basta
(uhm..), tapat ka lang in every way that you wanna do it.)

Chapter 3

Entrepreneurial Journey

Evelyn Cabiling – Vitug : The "Aha" Moment When She Started Putting
Up the We Care Drug

After she got married with Mr. Edito Penaflor-Vitug. She returned back here
in the Philippines and followed her husband’s decision that she will stay at home
since her husband cannot leave his poultry supply to follow her in states. Within
two years of their marriage while helping her husbands’ poultry supply, she got
bored and wants to have additional source of income for their growing family
without going back to states.

At first, she was worried and anxious. As mentioned by “Ms. Evelyn’, (And
Naisip naming, ahm… ahh… kaya kong
magtinda, as an owner of drugstore).

[And we are thinking that time that, I knew nothing but to work as a nurse. So,
we've been thinking of a work/business in additon to of poultry supply. We
thought, ahm ... ahh ... I could deal with customers, as an owner of drugstore].

Back in 1995, when she built her first branch of WE CARE at Dinalupihan,
Bataan. She started in Php 300,000 capital and hired six emloyees including
herself. The name We Care was crafted from the name of the hospital she worked
for in states “Dignity with Care” hospital. Now, she got involved into a business.
The reality is that as nurse, Ms. Evelyn also had her fulfilment operating her
drugstore, since it is somehow related with her previous work as nurse. She still

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 9 of 33
communicates with patients, provides consulatation and pre-counseling with her
customers in the drugstore.

Aside from the reason that she would like to have an additional source of
income for their family, she wanted also to help their community. Her first five
employees came from also in her hometown. And it took them almost six years,
that was 2000, when they started to build the WE CARE at Orani, Bataan.

Hardwork, Courage, and Faith in God Really Works for Me

It was February in 2001, after WE CARE Orani was built, unfortunately WE

CARE-Dinalupihan was burned down alltogether with the poultry supply. As in
nothing left. It was a depressing stage for their family especially to her. However,
with the encouragement and support from her loving husband, with her strong
faith in God despite of difficulties ecountered, WE CARE-Dinalupihan was rebuilt in
December 2001.

It was a blessing for them that before the disaster came, they already had
the WE CARE-Orani. From there, including their savings, they had the chance to
put it back the Dinalupihan branch. “Hardwork, courage, and faith in God really
works”, Ms. Evelyn says.

The Fruit of My Labor -- Ten Branches of WE CARE Drugstore

After facing some challenges and difficulties. She and her husband realized
that if they only had one or two business alone, it will be hard for them to start all
over again if something bad happen again. With that, they worked hard, lived the
never-say-die attitude, loved what they are doing, helped the community by

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 10 of 33
generating some jobs, and offered products with affordable prices. And she never
forgets to ask God for His guidance.

Today, the Vitug family owns several succesfull and diversified businesses.
These are computer shops, restaurants, and seven branches of WE CARE in Bataan
located at Limay, Balanga, Orani, Dinalupihan and other three branches located at
Angeles, and San Fernando, Pampanga.

APPENDIX B: INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION

Interviewer: Ma’am mag-start po muna tayo sa mga personal question, if it is okay

with you?

Ma’am Evelyn: Yes, of course.

Interviewer: We would like to know po, what is your motto in life?

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo. Well (uhm…) ang motto natin eh… before, I think mag-base
ako in a general aspect na if in all the things that you do, you should be honest
and truthful. So, wherever you will, kung ano man ang magiging (uhm...) gusto
mong puntahan, yung ambisyon mo, or any basta (uhm..), tapat ka lang in every
way that you wanna do it.

Interviewer: Yes.

naming siguro. You have to be honest, yun yung pinaka ano…, kung ano man
(uhm…), what I have wishes before, when I was young, and then hanggang sa
nag-mature na, and everything. ahh... Do what’s the best na kaya mo and then

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 13 of 33
basta honest ka lang, and you’re doing it well for good. And then don’t think of
others not so good, yun yung ating, (uhm…) what’s applied to me, sa amin.

Interviewer: Before po kayo mag–enter into a business, who is your inspiration

po?

Ma’am Evelyn: Oh! Actually, hindi ako sa business talaga. I’m a nurse by
profession. I graduated sa UST (uhm…) sa college. And then, nagwork muna ako
as a nurse sa states. Ah! It
turned out after, na kaya nagging sa business yung ano naming, it’s my husband’s.

Interviwer: Hmm…

interviewhin natin.

Interviewer and Ma’am Evelyn: (Laughing…)

Ma’am Evelyn: But anyway, ang ano niya talaga. His business is yung poultry
supply. Then, we decided, I went back home pagkayari namin. We got married,
from. Pagbalik ko, naisip ko … He will join me pagbalik sa states, so after, for a
year. So, hindi niya maiwanan yung negosyo niya, yung poultry supply. So, we
meet sa decision in the middle. So, yun… kung ayaw niya muna ngayon, I have to
stay home, sabi ng parents ko. “Sige, sumunod ka muna sa husband mo. Kung
ano, mahirap yung magkalayo”. So, I went back home pagkayari naming
magpakasal.

Interviewer: Opo

Ma’am Evelyn: …Pero nag work muna ako dun sa states with my family,
pagkatapos… pag hindi nag work yung business I mean hindi nagging successful,
ahh… yung buhay dito, babalik kami sa states.

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 14 of 33
Interviewer: So, definitely po, hindi po napasok or nagging dream ninyo yung as
businesswoman?

Ma’am Evelyn: Hindi. No. So, talagang nurse by profession when I was in
highschool, and then, sa growing family na kami and nagka sunud-sunod na yung
nagiging baby. First, yung panganay namin, (uhm…) though andyan na yung
business niya, so I have to be at home with my eldest son. And nakapag-isip kami
poultry supply. Naisip naming, ahm… ahh… kaya kong magtinda, as an owner of
drugstore.

Interviewer: It is because growing na yung family ninyo?

depend. And then I wanted to work, pero I’am helping out with the store niya, na
poultry supply. Tapos, ahm… ayun nag build kami. We decided to open a drugstore
dito rin sa Dinalupihan. Ahh… yun na, nag-ano na. Na-involve na, since it’s related
with my profession as a nurse, it’s easier for me.

yung communicating with the patients, na na-eenjoy ko naman, so… parang ganun
din.

Interviewer: Opo… opo.

So, what
you’re doing in the hospital is the same as sa community pharmacy. So, yun yung
nagging, na-unti-unti naming yung pagbobotika. And then, ahh… Una ang isip mo
lang ehh... You work hard. You have to sacrifice (hindi naman sacrifice), as long

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 15 of 33
as you’re enjoying what you do. Kahit na ba anong hirap siya. You work early
morning, you go home and then family.

Ma’am Evelyn: The business is different, 24-hrs ka.

Interviewer: Hands-on po kayo?

Ma’am Evelyn: Hands-on din. Nag-iisip, sabihin mo nang ine-enjoy mo yung

ginagawa mo. Hindi masyadong mabigat, so ayun… Dun nagsimula yung tinanong
mon a “Paano kami naging”, we went into business na. Ayun, kaya hanggang
nagkaroon na ng (mag branch-out na) and then… pero it took a while bago
nagkaroon kami ng other branch.

Interviewer: Ma’am, we would like to know din po… If nag start po siya as We
Care talaga?

Ma’am Evelyn: Yeah, “We Care Drug”. Oo.

Interviewer: Kailan po siya? And then saan po yung yung branch ninyo?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ah okay. Yung unang branch naming dito sa Dinalupihan, dyan sa
palengke. That was 1995 nung…

Interviewer: Matagal na po pala.

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo, 2 years old nun yung baby ko. That was ano na. Hindi pa yata
kayo pinapanganak (while laughing…)

Angelica: Kapapanganak ko pa lang po nun.

Ma’am Evelyn: My eldest is mag 26 pa lang siya. 2 years old siya, tama nung ano…
we put up the drugstore.

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 16 of 33
out na pala kayo?

That was 2001 yata yun, matagal na din. Dito
Ahh… You know
Henry Sy?

Interviewer: Yes Ma’am.

Ma’am Evelyn: And nagkkwentuhan lang kami, ahh… How, bakit yung ibang may
mga negosyo, wala sila, pero their business are working for them. So, naisip
namin, bakit hindi tayo mag branch-out, pandagdag dito sa botika. So… it took
about ilang years din noh…5 years kung isipin mo.

Interviewer: From 1995 to 2001

Ma’am Evelyn: 5 to 6 years bago kami nag decide na ano. Pero although, that
Yung time mo here and there,
punta ka sa Orani yung sumunod naming branch that time.

Interviewer: Ang dami na pong branch ng We Care?

Ma’am Evelyn: Slowly rin.

Everyone: (Laughing…)

Ma’am Evelyn: So ayun, sumunod yun, sa Orani yung sumunod naming branch.
Ahh…

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 17 of 33
Interviewer: Habang ano po Ma’am, during growing up po nung business ninyo,

Ahmm… Una yung sa pagabobotika, akala naming it’s
that easy ano. So, hindi pala. Yun na nga yung sinasabi ko na even if, we have to
get up early just like other business, dahil ikaw lang, hands-on ka, ikaw yung
Those
Ahm...Aside from
the (ahhh…) financial ano, status, kakayanan mo, you have to think about that
also. So, yung budgeting, yung input and then yung output.

Interviewer: Opo

So, you have to be very careful.

up family ninyo. Why
you continue?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahmm… You know yung ano, eh.. yung pangarap mo. You have to
move forward. Hindi ka pwedeng ahmm… tumigil.

Interviewer: Yes po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahh.. We (ano bang tawag dito). May nangyari kasi sa amin. Nag-

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 18 of 33
That was 2001. Na open up
muna naming yung sa Orani maybe 2000 yun and then 2001 nasunog yung sa
may palengke dito sa Dinalupihan pati yung poultry supply.

Interviewer: Magkatabi po sila?

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo. Magkatapat yung botika tsaka poultry supply. Ayun, nasunog
yun, totally, as in zero. I was very ano no.. down ka talaga, crisis na yung, yung
pinaghirapan mo. As in zero so, bumalik kami sa scratch ulit even if na
nakakalungkot, nakakaiyak.

Tapos you’re

thinking na kung ginawang pagsubok sayo, ganun. Tatanggapin mo, kung ano
man yung nangyaring ganun, nasunugan kami. Hindi mo pwedeng i-blame kahit
no pa man, kahit kanino. So kailangan talagang bumangon. Yun yung nangyari
samin nung husband ko, despite yung husband ko is with very strong personality
also. Ahmm.. “Talagang ganyan, tatanggapin mo” so.. na unti-unti naming. Since
nandudun pa yung tindahan namin sa Orani. So, from there, hanggang sa
nandiyan na yung pagtitipid, andyan na yung ano…

Interviewer: Kasi natuto na from the experiences.

Kasi dun kayo naka depende eh. You have to pay everything, kasi on-going yung
So, ayun tiniis

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 19 of 33
naming yun, unti-unti ng maibalik ulit. And then nangyari kasi yun, February
nasunog, then by December we were able to put it up back.

Interviewer: Do you think Ma’am yun po ang naging lucky break ninyo after po
ninyong masunugan?

Ma’am Evelyn: Yun yung nag-isip kami with my husband. Ang hirap pala pag,
ahmm.. kampante ka. Kala mo okay ka na. Tapos sa isang iglap mawawala sayo
yung isa o dalawa. Eh.. mas maganda siguro kung marami sila. Kung may mawala,
hindi ka mahihirapan. Masakit pero makakayanan mong bumangon ulit. Hindi
kaagad, yung difficulties, yun yung na anuhan naming. We have to strive again,
so iyon ahh… Hindi ka pwedeng pa easy easy lang. Parang lagi naming naiisip na,
ayan pagsubok sa taas, gigisingin kita, eto you have to work hard again.

Interviewer: Pero insured po yung botika ninyo?

Ma’am Evelyn: Hmm.. No. Wala, pag sa palengke, walang insurance. It’s difficult
kapag meron insurance. I don’t think kapag palengke ang… Yun yun, learning
lessons, you have to be very careful. Masakit, syempre., pero ah… that time akala
May ibang
Pero we tried so hard

naibalik ninyo.

Ma’am Evelyn: Uhmm.. Oo. Something na talagang ahhh… you have to work hard
talaga.

as “We Care”? Kung meron po kayong Vision, Mission?

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 20 of 33
Ma’am Evelyn: Meron kaming mission and vision pero…very simple lang naman

Interviewer: Opo, It’s okay lang po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Yung ano.. the name itself. I work sa hospital. Eh.. pag dalaga ka
ano.. maraming kang tinatrabaho. Pero anyway, yung pangalan ng isang hospital
na napagtrabahuan ko is “Care With Dignity” hospital. Yung isa kasi “SHARP”
hospital.
Erika”, which is yung pangalan nung poulty supply niya. Ahmm.. gagayahin ko na
lang sana..

Interviewer: Ahhh.. same as …

Ma’am Evelyn: Yes… ahhh.. supposed to be three names ang ia-apply mo sa DTI
gamot is..ahhh.. I forgot.. “Healthcare” something something. Basta tatlo yung
sinubmit ko. Wala.. na-decline lahat.
ko yung hospital na pinagtrabahuan ko which is “Care With Dignity”.
So, yun yung inapply naming,
na –approve. And then tama naman, at least it’s a dugstore.

Interviewer: Ang cute nga po ng “We Care” parang I care.

Everyone: (Laughing…)

Ma’am Evelyn: Ang isip mo talaga is to help out sa mga customers naming. Every
now and then.
So, ayun ang
naging pangalan niya, “We Care Drug”.

Interviewer: For the mission and vision po ng We Care?

yung ano. Pero yung ano… I wanted to be yung family community, ay.. to be

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 21 of 33
trusted by the family community pala. Na maging involve ka sa community. Ayun
you talked with them, ah yun yun una, initial na nae-enjoy ko. Everyday may
A little bit shy ako..

business ninyo, kasi meron kayong helping hand.

Everyone: (Laughs…)

Interviewer: You love po to help.

Ma’am Evelyn: Uhm… talagang.. kasi yun yung. Lumaki kasi siguro akong ganun
with my family. Kaya siguro, hindi.. lagi mong naiisip yung ibang tao. It’s not you.,
talagang kung makakatulong ka, bakit hindi diba.

Interviewer: Ma’am, do you believe na there is some sort of pattern to become a

successful entrepreneur? Meron po bang pattern, or what?

Ma’am Evelyn: Uhm… wala naman. Meron, you have to uhmm… Unang –una sa
taas, you have to have faith in God. Talagang magtitiyaga ka. Hindi ka pwedeng
nag gi-give-up ka agad. You have to work hard for it.
Ehh… you have to continue, hanggat hindi mo siya. You have to keep it up.

Interviewer: When it comes po dun sa financial, would you recommend po, if we

want to venture into a business, and then wala po kaming hawak na cash on hand
or savings. Would you recommend po ba na mag loan?

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 22 of 33
Ma’am Evelyn: Kapag naglo-loan, ang ano dun.. Ahh…consider it as a loan. Hindi
yun sa iyo. You have to kung ano yung responsibility mo na.. dedicated ka. Alamin
mo yung itatabi mo tsaka pambayad mo. Yung iba kasi , namamali sila. Okay. Yun!
Mismanage yung ano. Okay lang yung naglo-loan especially yung start-up.

Interviewer: Opo.

Ma’am Evelyn: Okay lang yun. Basta alam mo lang yung ginagawa mo.

Interviewer: Pero kayo po? You start from your savings talaga.

Ma’am Evelyn: Yeah! Savings with my husband, kasi nga may business na siya na
poultry supply. And then hanggang ahh.. nung kaming dalawa, may naitatabi. Yun
lang ang ginamit namin.

Interviewer: Ahh.. Opo.
sila from scratch. Nag-loan sila or parang lakas lang ng loob.

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo ganun. Talagang lakas lang ng loob talaga. Kami din,
nakakahiya man sabihin kung magkano yung ini-start naming sa pagbobotika. We
only started sa Php 300,000.00. Akala naming, enough na yun that time, that was
1995. Yun yung ano ha.. Kala mo kasya sa pagbobotika, hindi pala. Talagang ano…
naunti-unti lang talaga naming. Ahmm… walang an, talagang ano, di man, tawag
dito. You have to pay COD diba , ganun yung mga kalakaran sa….

Interviewer: Yes po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Your first three payment, you have to pay COD and then 15 days.
Iyon sa tiyaga lang talaga. Napaikot ang napaikot. So, hanggang nakayanan na
magbayad.

Interviewer: Discipline po talaga.

Ma’am Evelyn: Discipline. Oo.

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 23 of 33
May plan po ba
kayo to compete globally? Or sa other area po ng Bataan?

Ma’am Evelyn: Slowly, we are. Nag –eexpand kami. Ahm… nandyan yung
Olongapo, and then.. we have 3 in Olongapo. And then 1 in Guagua, Pampanga,
2 in Angeles, then…

Everyone: (Laughing…)

Ma’am Evelyn: Hindi naman (while laughing). Tapos yun na. Ngayon under

Interviewer: Yun po yung pinakamalayo as of now?

Ma’am Evelyn: Angeles. Yung dalawa doon.

Interviewer: In time po, baka mag-expand pa kayo. Makarating na po ng Metro

Manila. Hahahaha

Ma’am Evelyn: Hahahahaha! Depende na sa mga anak ko siguro, with their help.

Interviewer: Parang magiging family business.

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo, family business na.

Angelica: Sa Bataan Ma’am, ilang branch ang meron kayo?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahmm… Pito.

Interviewer: Mariveles po ba meron na?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahm.. hanggang Limay pa lang kami.

Angelica: Limay… Orani (while counting…)

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 24 of 33
Ma’am Evelyn: Limay, Orani, 3 sa Balanga, and then dito 2 sa Dinalupihan.

Interviewer: Ma’am nung nag start po kayo, may empleyado po kayong hi-nire or
kayo lang po talaga?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahhh… meron, meron. Nag-hire naman kami ng empleyado, bale
ako, kasama ako… anim yata kami, pang-anim ako. Sa botika, we have a
pharmacist. Nag-hire ako ng pharmacist and then mga sales clerk, taga samin din
sa Daan Bago. And yun… hanggang sa naunti-unti, hanggang sa dumami. They
stayed with us for a long time.

Kahit
na successful na po kayo.

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahmmmm… Oh yeah. Marami naman. Kaya lang, sa negosyo. It’s
ahh… taking care of your people, empleyado mo. Iba-ibang tao mo, how you would
handle your people, your workforce.
Ako hindi naman, kasi as a, kami yung may-ari. We’re not really hard person to
talk to. Basta when it comes to our employees. Tapos yun nga, botika na itself,
maraming inventories. Inside the business na yun. How to handle na.. inventories,
yung losses, ahmm.. marami.

Interviewer: Ma’am, if you had one piece of advice sa amin in starting up a

business. What would it be po Ma’am?

Ma’am Evelyn: Okay. You have to focus. You aim hard talaga na “kaya ko ‘to”. I
can handle it. And then don’t give up, kakayanin ninyo. Lalo na kayo mga bata pa.
You’re still young, so kung ano yung gusto ko. Yes, yes… kaya. Kasi may mga.. at
your age kaya… Ahh… marami pa kayo ahhh. Mas yung generation ninyo is more
on us.

Everyone: (Laughing…)

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 25 of 33
Ma’am Evelyn: Itong mga… tawag dito…yung mga..

Interviewer: Online.. online.. Digital Marketing.

Ma’am Eveleyn: Yes. Digital… Oh no! We don’t have any idea of those. Ngayon
lang. With the help of my son lang, doon lang kami natututo unti-unti.

business. How you handle them po? Tsaka how you make it on top?

Ma’am Evelyn: Well… ahhh…Actually, friendly competitors. I don’t see them bad.
I don’t see them… Even though, kasi business hanap buhay lang ganyan ganyan.
I don’t see them not my … tawag dito.. kaaway…na ano, or kaya gusto ko silang
i-compete.

yung botikang ‘to” No! No! Not that. Never na.. Ako nga minsan yung nahihiya at
nakapag open ako doon…Masasaktan yung ibang ano.. ganyan ganyan.

Interviewer: Yung ibang small drugstores.

Kasi I always
pray na.. “Is this your way , telling me na magput –up ako dito”. Kasi ahh… mag
–aask ka. Minsan, it happen always na gusto kong magput-up dito, pero it will take
awhile bago ka mabigyan ng chance. Walang.. walang available, pero pagka
umayaw ka na “Ayoko na”. Tapos biglang ano.. biglang may darating na magsasabi
Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 26 of 33
sa akin na.. “Oh, merong ganyan ganyan”. Parang “Lord eto na po ba ‘yun?”. Yun
bang parang ganun.

So parang ganung yun. I hope hindi ko kayoo.. (while
laughing)

Interviewer: Ma’am, have you encountered po ba ng nga complaints dun sa

drugstore?

Ma’am Evelyn: From the customers?

Interviewer: Yes Ma’am.

Ma’am Evelyn. From the customers, meron.

Interviewer: How you handle the complaints po?

Ma’am Evelyn: You cannot please everyone. So ang business mo is a drugstore.

You have to accept, yun nga.
You have to explain, apologize. Ahm… sasagutin mo kung ano man yun.

Interviewer: Talagang kayo po yung nakikipag –usap?

Ma’am Evelyn: Oo. And kung wala man ako. Talagang ina-advise ko yung mga
managers and pharmacists naming na botika tayo. Na nandyan sila, kasi nagpunta,
may karamdaman yan. So, ahh.. tanggapin ninyo kung ano man yung na-
cocomplain nila or and then gawan ng paraan kaagad, solusyunan. Doon pa lang
gawa na agad ng paraan, huwag ng palalagpasin pa within the day.

Interviewer: Para hindi na po maulit.

Ma’am Evelyn: You have to correct it. Oo. And then prove it kung saan tayo
nagkamali. Just like what I’ve said, yung mga, kasi iba –iba yung mga pharmacy
assistants natin. Kaya bawal na bawal kapag nagpapa-orient yung HR namin,
Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 27 of 33
bawal ang suplada, bawal yung masungit. Iba kami, botika kasi. So yun, until now

Interviewer: Ma’am, to end up po this conversation. Since hindi ninyo pop ala
inyong dream. As as successful entrepreneur po ngayon, what is your favorite
aspect po in being an entrepreneur?

Ma’am Evelyn: Oh!.. Okay! Ahmm.. Being an entrepreneur, sana kayo din maging
ganun.

Interviewer: Ano po yung naging favorite part ninyo as an entrepreneur unlike po

nung nagta-trabaho kayo sa hospital?

Ma’am Evelyn: Ahhhh.. my husband always ask me that.

Everyone: (Laughs)

Ma’am Evelyn: As a nurse diba. You ano diba, yung compensation is good.

Interviewer: Yes po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Sa states, dito ngayon. Yung status naming ngayon, even if I’am
working as a nurse sa states. Ahhh… okay pa rin yung compensation mo but if
you’re an entrepreneur, a businesswoman, marami kang.. Mas advantage ka pa
rin kahit na ahmm… by profession ang work mo, yung career mo. Iba!
yung ordinary career, just like as a nurse, mahihigitan mo siya. If you’re dreaming
that far pa. Kayo mga bata pa kayo, ahh.. to be successful , aahhh… anong tawag
dito. You have advantage kasi sa financial status mo. Ahmmm. Kita mo yung ibang
But you
can afford then lesser yung ano. Yung time.. dito pwede kang.. Halimbawa, nag
work ka nga, yung 24 hours mo you’re involve. Dito, flexible ang time mo. And

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 28 of 33
then, gawin mo kaagad lahat, and then you have time for yourself. Ahh.. ganun,
time management. In work, hindi mo kayang gawin yun, you have a boss, lahat
susundin mo siya. Hahha. O dito ikaw, tututukan mo lang naman yung tao mo, i-
ga-guide mo. Nakakatulong ka sa community namin/ natin ganon. Malaking
parang, maganda yung nakaktulong ka rin sa iba and then in a way ahm… kapag
may other way kang mapagkukuhanan. Just like when I’m telling my kids na.. mas
Diba? So dun
lang. Kayo alam ninyo ang ibig kong sabihin. Limited yung sources mo.
diba. So, yun…ahmm.. and.. yung sa challenges kaya yan eh.
naming eh. Hahaha diba? So yun ang ibig kong sabihin, mas maganda, ah.. I wish
you would ano.

Ma’am Evelyn: Oh, ako naman ang magtatanong (while laughing).

Interviewer: Sure Ma’am.

Ma’am Evelyn: (Laughing..) No! No! No! No. I just want you to. Sana may napulot
kayo from me.

Interviewer: Yes Ma’am, madami po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Kahit it’s simple. Kung hindi ninyo maitatanong , I’m very shy,
talagang hindi ako makwento. I cannot tell everything what it is in my mind. Kilala
I just tell them “pwede bang ganito”,
alam naman nila. Nakakasunod sila sa akin. Tingin nila sa akin sister, kung ano,
pag may problema sila, they call and text me anytime naman.

Celine B. Sapit and Angelica A. Valerio: Entrepreneurial Journey of Evelyn Cabiling - Vitug Page 29 of 33
Interviewer: Second trisemester pa lang po naming.

Ma’am Evelyn: Ano yun, kelan kayo matatapos?

Interviewer: Next year pa po.

Ma’am Evelyn: Eh kayo ano bang plano ninyo pagkayari?

Interviewer: Yun nga po, mag –enter into a business. Kahit small one po muna.

Ma’am Evelyn: Everything starts in small. Kung meron kang abilidad na creative.
You do that. Think of something gusto ninyo.

Interview: Ma’am thank you so much po talaga for your time. Despite of your busy
schedule yo still find time to accommodate us.

Ma’am Evely. No problem. Thank you din.
