Q.How are insulators charged?

Ans:Insulators are charged by friction. When two different insulating materials are

rubbed against each other they become electrically charged.
When the materials are rubbed against each other:
Negatively charged particles called electrons move from one material to the other.
The material that loses electrons becomes positively charged.
The material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged.
Both materials gain an equal amount of charge, but the charges are opposite.
Q. Why is a neutral object attracted to a charged object?
Ans:When a negatively charged object is brought near an uncharged body, it repels
the free electrons from the uncharged body towards its farther end. As such, the
closer end of the uncharged body now experiences lack of electrons, which is a
characteristic of positive charge. Hence, the ends of the two bodies develop
opposite charges and mutual attraction occurs.
